Free Trial Message for App editors

My app uses the basic Sharepoint, Outlook, D365 Users and Standard Approvals connectors. The app when shared with users in the organization get a start a free trial message when opening the play link for the app. Those same users can access the power studio environment, open the solution and then open the app in an edit mode and play it from there.

Why?? Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

The "Start a free trial" message for users opening your app via the play link usually means those users do not have the required Power Apps license or permission to run the app in that environment, even though they can open it in edit mode via Power Apps Studio.

Reason users can open in edit mode but not run the app:
    1. Opening in Power Apps Studio uses the maker’s permissions and licenses.
    2. Running the app via play link requires the user’s own license and permissions.
    3. If the user lacks a license or environment access, they get the trial prompt.
     App Sharing best practices:
    • Share the app via the Power Apps portal with proper user permissions.
    • Avoid sharing just the direct play link without environment access.

This behavior is confusing, but it’s actually a known licensing nuance in Microsoft Power Apps rather than an issue with your app.

The app works in edit mode because maker permissions bypass strict checks, but play mode enforces full licensing—likely triggered by the Office 365 Users connector or environment setup.

So does this mean the users don't have the license or are there some permissions I can toggle on/off by working with the admin to ensure the users can run it?

When editing an app, no specific licences are needed.

In your case, let's suppose you add a premium connector (eg, SQL Server). If you don't have a premium license, you'd still be able to connect to SQL Server at design time and to edit the app, but you'd be prompted to start a trial at play time if you don't have a premium license.

In the case of the users, it's possible that they don't have sufficient standard licensing, which would explain why they're prompted to start a trial when they play the app. I would suggest you ask a user to check their license by clicking the Cog icon > Plan(s) in Power Apps. That will list their license and it should hopefully be clearer.

The terminology you are using is very confusing, if you have powerapps license the connectors which you are using are standard ones those are already covered part of license.

If you are connecting with SQL / Dataverse/ Databricks those are the premium connector for that you need a premium license .
