AI Builder in power platform and Developer tenant

HI

I wanted to check whether AI Builder can be used in a developer tenant. I’m currently unable to access it in my developer environment, and I don’t see any option to purchase additional licenses or credits within the developer tenant.

Any insights or guidance on this would be really helpful.

The Power Apps Developer Plan does not include AI Builder use rights by default. While you can build and test apps in a developer environment for free, accessing AI Builder typically requires a separate paid license or an active trial

Thanks i have already seen the FAQ, where it's mentioned we can start the trial, but if I'm not wrong, I am not able to get the trial started in my developer environment

    Hi @ ,

If you check the Power Apps Developer Plan documentation under “Does the Power Apps Developer plan include AI Builder use rights?”, Microsoft states: “No. However, users may start an AI Builder trial to try out the AI Builder capabilities.”
    Link: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/developer/plan#does-the-power-apps-developer-plan-include-ai-builder-use-rights

    So in summary:

    • The Developer Plan itself doesn’t include AI Builder use rights or credits.

    • You are allowed to start an AI Builder trial from a developer environment, but whether you actually see the trial option depends on tenant‑level settings and whether your organization already has AI Builder capacity. Trials are only available in tenants without existing AI Builder credits.

    • Because you’re not seeing any trial option in your developer environment, it’s likely due to tenant restrictions or existing paid AI Builder capacity, not a limitation of the Developer Plan itself.

To enable AI Builder in a developer environment, an admin needs to:

    1. Sign in to the Power Platform admin center.

    2. Go to Environments → your developer environment → Settings → Product → Features.

    3. Under AI Builder, turn AI Builder / AI prompts to On, then Save.

If AI Builder still doesn’t appear, the tenant must also have AI Builder credits or a trial available; without capacity, it won’t light up even if enabled.

I am not talking about the developer plan; I was referring to the sandbox/developer tenant part of the M365 developer program

    Hi @,

I enabled AI Builder in my developer environment last year using the environment feature toggle.

At that time, under Power Platform admin center → Environment → Settings → Product → Features, I could see two separate toggles:

AI Builder – Enable the usage of AI Builder models (preview)

AI prompts – Enable the AI prompts feature in Power Platform and Copilot Studio

I turned both On, and AI Builder started working.

This year, when I go back to the same place, I no longer see the “AI Builder” toggle. I only see AI prompts.

Even though the AI Builder toggle is gone, I can still use all the AI Builder actions in Power Automate (Analyze sentiment, Process documents, Run a prompt, etc.), so clearly AI Builder is still active in my environment.

Microsoft has now published the End of AI Builder credits announcement, which explains that AI Builder credits are being retired and replaced with the new licensing/consumption model for AI features:

End of AI Builder credits | Microsoft Learn: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/ai-builder/endofaibcredits

    My understanding is:

Last year, AI Builder and AI prompts surfaced as two related toggles in environment features.

With the new AI prompts / Copilot model and the retirement of AI Builder credits, the UI has changed. In some tenants/environments (including mine), the separate “AI Builder” switch no longer appears, even though the AI Builder capabilities are still available.

As long as AI prompts is enabled and the tenant has the right AI licensing/capacity, you can still use AI Builder actions and prompts in Power Automate and Copilot Studio. I might be wrong.

For reference, here are screenshots from last year (showing both AI Builder and AI prompts toggles) and from this year (showing only AI prompts, plus a screenshot proving that AI Builder actions still work in Power Automate).

    Thanks for the clarification.

My main question is not how to enable AI builder, but how to get AI builder in Sandbox / Developer Tenant
