Update item with multiple choice columns

Hi,

I have a SharePoint list with an approval flow.

The approval flow is set to inform the right people and all works fine.

The next tweak I would like to make is updating the SharePoint list item when the approval is rejected.

The problem that I'm running in to is with columns that allow multiple choices.

I get an apply to each action for all of the columns that potentially have multiple values.

The end result is that for each of the columns, only the last value is retained.

None of the column with multiple choice need to be updated in the first place.

(I can't get an image of the flow attached)

Kind regards,

Wouter

    Hi @Anonymous,

During the process of Approval request and response, did you ever change the value of multiple choice column?

If you didn't change its value, there is no need to update this column.

If you have changed the value and you want to update this column, you should initialize an Array variable, then use the Apply to each to append each value from the item into the array, after that, put the array into the field of Choice column, please notice the red circle marked:

    @v-litu-msft

    Thank you,

I got it to work without the arrey formula. I kept getting a bad gateway error before, but that error seems to have resolved itself.

    Best regards,

    Wouter

    Hi!

I am trying to follow the desciption above, however, I can't see the sign marked in red in the picture above, and I can't manage to insert my array variable into the field there.
In my case, it's about topics of a list entry, so the array variable I created and put in the topics is called "arrTopics".

    Thank you for your help!

Thank you. Is there anywhere to go to read documentation for how all these actions operate and the ins and outs with how to manipulate them? As a programmer, if I want to learn how something works in JavaScript for instance, there is vast documentation detailing every single component, method, function, etc. and how they work and what you can do to them. With Power Automate, I'm left scrounging around and hoping someone has asked a similar question.

    Hi,

I have left my multiple choice column blank in 'Update Item', so the flow doesn't update it, but then every time the flow outputs null value for that column even though I haven't put it into the action. Would you be able to help me please?

I dont want to reopen this topic but this might help some people that rely on parallel "apply to each" loops.

If you use parallel loops, you cant use array variables.

Instead what you can do, is to map your array like in the following screenshot.

This will give you much better performance when working with a lot of records.
