Power Automate Desktop Flow Fails When Remote Desktop Session Is Minimized

Good day, everyone!

I would like to ask for your assistance. I created a flow in Power Automate Desktop in which one of the steps is to access Copilot 365 Web, focus on the tab where Copilot is open, click the “New chat” button, wait for the text field to appear, type the prompt by sending physical keystrokes (it's the only way Copilot accepts an automatic Prompt), and then press the “Send” button.

This flow is executed on a Virtual Machine accessed via Remote Desktop on Windows 11.

After starting the flow, I minimize the Remote Desktop application and continue working on my local machine.

Everything works perfectly on my notebook.

However, the exact same flow is executed by a teammate who has exactly the same notebook model and exactly the same access to the Virtual Machine via Windows 11 Remote Desktop. We both use Microsoft Edge.

PROBLEM

The issue is that when he minimizes or closes the Remote Desktop session, the flow stops working and throws an error. In my case, the flow continues running normally in the background, successfully finding all selectors and performing the actions.

We have already checked the Remote Desktop settings, the power settings on both the notebook and the Virtual Machine, and his browser settings in Edge.

We were unable to find any differences.

Could anyone provide insights into why this issue might be happening?

Best regards,

Ricardo Luiz Marcello

    You should not close the Remote Desktop while the flow is running since that will most definitely make the attended flow run to fail. So make sure your teammate is not ever closing/disconnecting from the Remote Desktop session (maybe he reported to you that he minimized the window when in reality he closed it?)
    When he minimizes it does the Windows session go to sleep or locked or otherwise be inactivated? The flow needs to have active Windows user session (with active graphical desktop).

    If there is no active windows session then keystrokes will fail to send and no UI selectors cannot be found.

    Maybe instead of minimizing the Remote Desktop window your teammate should try to just have some other window on top of it so that his main computer is not focused on the remote desktop session but its not minimized either. For example just open a browser window on top of it so that the remote desktop window is hidden from view but not minimized and so it doesn't get inactivated.

    @eetuRobo,

    Thank you for replying! I understand what you’re saying; however, please note that on my laptop the flow continues to work perfectly even when I minimize or close the Remote Desktop window.

    This same behavior does not occur only on my colleague’s laptop.

    This is the point I am trying to address: why are there different behaviors on different computers?

    @rickmarcello happy to help.

    You said it works perfectly even when you close the Remote Desktop window. In my knowledge it should not be able to continue flow run if you close the Remote Desktop window since that will deactivate the GUI on the remote desktop and there for it should fail. But maybe I am wrong and it actually is able to keep the GUI active and session alive. If that's the case then I would assume your remote desktop/virtual machine has different settings than your colleagues and your colleagues remote desktop/vm will deactivate the GUI to save recourses even when minimized while yours does not do that.

    So even though you said you checked it I think the difference should be in the VM / Remote Desktop. So best bet might be to google / ask some AI chatbot on how to set it so that it does not close the session / inactivate the GUI when minimized.
    I found this is its any help: https://docs.uipath.com/robot/standalone/2023.4/user-guide/executing-tasks-in-a-minimized-rdp-window

    When ever I have ran flows attended on remote desktop I have always just left the remote desktop open as it is full sized but just open browser window or some different window on top of it so that I don't accidentally interfere with the flow run. I would assume that would work with your colleague too.

    @eetuRobo,

    Your last message solved the problem!

    After configuring the Registry Editor as suggested in the link, the issue was resolved.

    Thank you very much!
