I have added a Topic named Products , which will trigger when user ask for list of Products, then i am showing entity options, as follow:-

now when i ask the agent "list of Products" >> the agent will reply with the entities options -which is correct->> but after selecting an entity option, the agent will automatically search the knowledge sources although i did not add any generative answer action inside the Product Topic, so how this was handled behind the scenes ??

Thanks

    Hi John,

Can you please explain more about your agent? Do you have knowledge sources configured? Do you allow the agent to use AI for its orchestration? What do you mean by "entity option"? Is that the list of options for user as displayed in your screenshot? What are the intended actions that the agent should do?

Your agent is using Generative Orchestration, so the behavior is different from Classic Orchestration. By default, newly created agents in Copilot Studio use Generative Orchestration.

With Generative Orchestration enabled, Copilot Studio can automatically continue generating a response after the topic finishes. This can include:

    • using the information returned from the topic
    • searching connected knowledge sources
    • generating an additional AI response

This can happen even if you did not add a “Create generative answers” node.

In your case, after the user selects the entity option, the topic finishes and the orchestrator continues processing the request. That is why you see the extra generated answer.

    What you can do:

I would first try adding an “End Conversation” node at the end of the topic.

In most cases, this stops the orchestrator from continuing with additional AI-generated responses or proactive knowledge searches for that turn.

I would not disable Generative Orchestration (and go back to Classic Orchestration) completely unless you need full manual control, because you would lose features like: automatic intent handlingproactive knowledge usage, multi-turn orchestration etc. (all generative orchestration benefits)

    Hope it helps!

Great point by @chiaraalina To add a bit more context:

This is Generative Orchestration at work. When your Products topic finishes and the user selects an option, the orchestrator doesn't just stop — it keeps reasoning and thinks "the user picked something, they probably want more info" and automatically searches your knowledge source to fill that gap.

    Quick fixes:

    • Add an "End current topic" node at the end of your topic — cleanest way to signal the orchestrator to stop

    • Add a closing "Send a message" node with a definitive statement before the end

    • If you want the knowledge search but on your own terms, add a "Generative answers" node yourself inside the topic, so you control what context gets passed to it

You don't need to disable Generative Orchestration entirely — you'd lose a lot of good stuff. Just explicitly close out the topic and the extra search should stop triggering.
