I am trying to create a model driven app based on an event list, but when I go to pick it from my site, it does not show. It seems the only option is to put in a custom list name but that does not seem to connect. I tried the url, but it cannot connect. Is there any way to find and connect an event list to an app?

I have some confusion with your requirement since the Model-driven app can only connect to CDS entity, so I guess you're referring to connecting the canvas app to the SharePoint event list.
If so, you need to manually enter the event list name in the last option box when you select the sharepoint list.
