Fabric Data Agent integration with new Copilot Studio Agent experience

Hi all,

I currently have a Fabric Data Agent up and running, and I’m able to successfully connect to it from a Copilot agent created using the classic (legacy) agent experience, following this documentation:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/fabric/data-science/data-agent-microsoft-copilot-studio

However, I’m struggling to understand how (or if) this works with the new Agent experience in Copilot Studio.

Questions

  1.

Is it currently possible to add a Fabric Data Agent as a connected agent in the new Agent experience?

I don’t see any obvious option to do so.

  2.

Should it be possible to add the Fabric Data Agent via MCP (under Tools)?

    Based on this documentation:

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/fabric/data-science/data-agent-mcp-server

    It states:

"Currently, you can use the Fabric data agent MCP server only in VS Code. If you're using your own MCP client, it can also work, as long as you set up authentication."

  3. Has anyone successfully integrated the Fabric Data Agent via MCP with the new Copilot agents?

    • If yes, how did you handle authentication?

    • Did you use OAuth2 or another approach?

    •

  4.

Any insights, experiences, or confirmation of current limitations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

    Hi @AZ79,

Yes, it works in the new experience too, it's just labelled differently than you might expect.

In the new agent experience, go to Agents (top pane) > + Add, and you'll see Fabric data agents listed there as connected agents, not under Tools. You don't need to set it up as MCP manually, Microsoft's own integration handles that connection for you behind the scenes when you add it this way.

Requirements: same tenant for both the Fabric data agent and the Copilot Studio agent, signed in with the same account on both sides, the Fabric data agent published with a good description, and you need at least read access to it.

So skip the manual MCP/Tools route entirely, that's for VS Code or custom MCP clients per the doc you found. The native Agents > Add path is the supported way for Copilot Studio and it authenticates using your existing Fabric connection, no separate OAuth setup needed on your end.

Docs: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/fabric/data-science/data-agent-microsoft-copilot-studio (this still applies to the new experience, the steps are just under Agents instead of the old menu location).

    Best regards,

    Valantis

    Hi @AZ79,

The new Agent experience in Microsoft Copilot Studio fully supports integration with Fabric Data Agents, enabling seamless agent-to-agent collaboration similar to the classic (legacy) experience but with enhanced low-code configuration and orchestration capabilities.

Important point to notice: This integration is currently in preview and documented in Microsoft Learn under “Consume a Fabric Data Agent in Microsoft Copilot Studio (preview).” - see references.

If you see the Full Tutorial - you wont struggle I guess.

    Hi @Valantis

When you say " go to Agents (top pane) > + Add" - where would that be? There is menu item called "Connected agents". But this does not show any Fabric data agents. It only seems to show other copilot agents created in the new experience.

    Could you please advise?

    Thanks
    Alen

    Hi @AZ79,

On the Agents page, look for a button called "Add an agent" (not the Connected agents list itself, that just shows what's already added). Click it, and you'll get a choice between connecting to another Copilot Studio agent vs "Connect to an external agent", under that external option you'll see Microsoft Fabric as one of the agent types, alongside Microsoft Foundry and M365 Agents SDK. Pick Fabric, then select your existing connection or create a new one.

If you genuinely don't see "Add an agent" anywhere on that page at all, it's likely a licensing/preview enablement gap rather than something you're doing wrong, this whole capability is still public preview.

Worth knowing before you build on this: Fabric Data agents currently can't be called via a Redirect node inside a topic, can't be referenced directly in instructions text, and don't work at all if your main agent gets deployed to Microsoft 365 Copilot. So it's tool-call style invocation only for now, not topic-driven.

    Best regards,

    Hi @Valantis

    Thanks for your help.

What you describe sounds like the way of doing this in classic experience (also the document link).

Would it be possible to post a screenshot how this is done/looks like in new Copilot agent experience?

    Thanks.
