What consumes the most credits in Copilot Studio?

I deployed an automation and it spiked my credit consumption in production. Do you have any tips on how to optimize credit usage? What are the main drivers or connections that impact this?

Yes. In Power Automate, Copilot Studio, AI Builder, and Power Platform automations, credit consumption can increase very quickly after moving from test volumes

    to production volumes.

the most common root causes are:
    • Generative AI calls (Copilot Studio or AI Builder).
    • Unexpected flow volume caused by triggers, loops, or retries.
    • Large knowledge sources being searched on every interaction.
    • Agent chaining where one conversation invokes multiple agents.
Start by reviewing consumption in the Power Platform Admin Center to identify the exact service consuming the credits. Once identified, optimize the trigger

frequency, reduce unnecessary AI calls, narrow knowledge sources, and cache reusable results. These changes typically provide the largest reduction in

    production credit usage.

Microsoft docs confirm the main credit drivers from highest to lowest cost:

Highest: Content processing (document extraction, OCR) — 8 credits per page. If your automation processes PDFs or documents this adds up fast at scale.
High: Agent flow actions  5 credits per action call. Every action your agent flow executes in production consumes credits.

Medium: Generative answers  2 credits each. Every AI-generated response the agent produces costs credits.

Since you deployed an automation that spiked usage, agent flow actions are the most likely culprit. Check PPAC > Licensing > Copilot Credits and look at the consumption details grid  it shows credits per agent and per feature so you can see exactly what's causing the spike.

    Optimization tips:
    1. Reduce unnecessary agent flow action calls — batch operations where possible instead of one action per item
    2. Add conditions before generative AI calls so the agent only invokes them when actually needed
    3. Check if your automation is running on a trigger that fires more frequently than expected (check trigger conditions)
    4. Autonomous/unattended runs always consume credits. M365 Copilot licensed users doing interactive sessions don't consume credits — so separating interactive vs autonomous workloads saves credits
