Migrate Dev to Prod Canvas on same Environment Best Practices

Hi PowerApps Community,

Any good tips or best practices on migrating dev canvas to prod canvas on the same environment?

Context:

  1. I have two canvas on the same environment
  2. One is DEV and the other PROD
  3. I am modifying/updating the DEV canvas most of the time.
  4. Any ways I can transfer/migrate the changes to PROD canvas?
  5. Also there are connections like gateway/connectors/PowerAutomate Flows

Thanks!

Hi @elmz , I am not 100% sure what you are asking.

If are asking how do you test the Solution deployment, and make sure that apps are working in the destination environment.  Then you can simply do this by having a 3rd environment called Test.  This way you can test your deployment process and have a place to Test apps without affecting your Dev or Prod apps.

A Solution is just a container to hold all of the related components of an app together.  They do not affect how your apps work or any other apps in your Dev environment that are not in Solutions.

If I want to test out the Solution in the dev environment before deploying into the prod environment.
    How do I do that?

Will it affect the current canvas app in my dev environment?

Yes, you can add Connection References to the Solution to achieve this. Read more here

    Hi @HSheild ,

    Thanks for the prompt reply!

To put everything into a Solution, can I specify the connections/gateway as well?
Because the Power Automate flows tagged to the Dev canvas app might need to change to production flows too

    Hi @elmz

Is there any reason why you are trying to do this in the same environment?  There is no way for you to easily transfer changes from your Dev app to the Prod app if they are in the same environment.

If I was you, I would create a new environment so that you have a Sandbox (or Default environment) for the Dev app and a Production environment for the Prod app.  You can then put everything into a Solution and use that to easily update the Prod app with changes you make in the Dev app.
