Unable to add AI search Index as knowledge to the Copilot Studio Agent

Hi All,

From last few days we have been facing issues while attaching AI search Index as a knowledge to Copilot Studio Agent. Below are the steps which are followed.

Create a Copilot Studio Agent
On the overview pane, using '+Add Knowledge" option
Create a connection to AI Search Service (This was successfully created) and the Preview also works
When adding this Index to the Agent we get below Error:

Try to repeat again the process, but use the developer toolbar on your browser, using the network tab, and paste here the log details on failure requests.

Below is the error captured from the Network tab. Could you let us know if any specific roles or permissions are now required on the Dataverse? This is something we were able to do previously without issues, so we want to confirm whether there has been a recent change in the permissions model.

Hi @SNPSachinSahu,

The error message: the user doesn't have AppendToAccess right on the bot (agent) entity in Dataverse. This is a Dataverse security role issue, not an AI Search configuration issue.

When you add a knowledge source to an agent, Copilot Studio writes a relationship record that links the knowledge source to the agent entity (bot table) in Dataverse. The AppendTo privilege is required on the bot table for this write operation to succeed. The user hitting this error is missing that privilege.

The fix: the user needs a security role with at least Business Unit level AppendTo privilege on the bot (agent) Dataverse entity.

Microsoft docs confirm that to author agents, users need the Environment Maker role or an equivalent role that includes the required Dataverse permissions for agent tables. If the user has a custom security role or a restricted role, it likely doesn't include AppendTo on the bot entity.

To fix this:
1. Go to Power Platform Admin Center > your environment > Users > find the user
2. Check their assigned security roles
3. Either assign the Environment Maker role, or if you're using a custom role, add AppendTo privilege on the bot entity at Business Unit level or higher

The error says it started happening recently despite working before. This points to a permission change in the environment rather than a configuration change in the agent or AI Search. Check if any security roles were modified or if the user was moved to a different business unit recently.
