Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding the capabilities of agents built with Copilot Studio, especially compared to what is possible with Microsoft 365 Copilot.
This raises additional questions around channel‑specific behavior.
My goal is to enable functionality in a Copilot Studio agent that is similar to what users experience with Microsoft 365 Copilot (Word / Excel). I would like to better understand where the technical and architectural boundaries of Copilot Studio are, and what the recommended pattern is for this use case.
Thanks a lot for any guidance, clarification, or real‑world examples. Best regards,
Nick
Copilot Studio agents cannot natively generate and deliver binary files like Excel, Word, or PDFs to users. While the model may say it created a file, the platform itself does not automatically generate, store, or provide downloads unless additional automation is configured. This differs from Microsoft 365 Copilot, which operates directly inside apps such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft OneDrive, allowing it to create, save, and present files through built-in integrations with Microsoft Graph.
In contrast, Microsoft Copilot Studio runs as an automation-focused agent platform without implicit storage access or file-hosting capabilities. Occasionally, Test Chat may display temporary Microsoft SharePoint links because it runs with maker credentials, but these often point to non-existent files. Licensing (including Copilot Studio Pro) does not change this limitation. The supported approach is to connect the agent to Microsoft Power Automate or an Agent Flow to generate the Excel file, store it in SharePoint or OneDrive, and then return a link to the user. This reflects the intended architecture and the separation between generative responses and actual system actions.
