Power Automate Export email (V2) creates .msg files that Outlook can’t open

Hello everyone,

I’ve set up a Power Automate flow that:

  • Retrieves Outlook emails,
  • Uses the Export email (V2) action,
  • Then saves the file to SharePoint with the Create file action, giving it the .msg extension
The file is created, but when I try to open it in Outlook, I get the error:
  • “Sorry, we couldn’t open the file”
  • “Error opening file”
Note:
When I manually save an email from Outlook as .msg, the file opens with no issue. But with Power Automate, it doesn’t work.
 My question:
  • Has the Export email (V2) action changed its behavior and no longer exports a proper .msg?
  • Is there a way to generate a valid Outlook-compatible .msg file via Power Automate?
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi @SAIFON,
Can you try this : (instead of .msg try .eml)

    Hi @Power Apps 1919 ,
I adapted the suggestion in my flow (see attached screenshot), but when I try to open the generated file in Outlook, it still doesn’t work — I keep getting the same Outlook error message.

In my testing your flow structure works. The only thing I can recommend is in your Create File action, verify that the dynamic content Body is sourced in your Export Email action and not the Get Emails action, as that does cause the issue you're experiencing.

    Hi @SAIFON,
    Adding to @Tomac Point,
Can you try to format the received time to this expression(
    formatDateTime(utcNow(),'yyyy_mm_dd_hh_MM_ss')
    and try it again.

Thank you @Tomac & @Power Apps 1919 . In the end, the issue was with my Outlook. I had saved the file with the .eml extension instead of .msg, and I was able to open it successfully in another Outlook.
