The action ‘...’ with output mode ‘Generate a Message’ must have at least one output set

My setup:

  • Generative mode is enabled
  • I have one action utilizing a Power Automate flow
  • I use output mode Al dynamically generates a message (default)
  • I can normally see my output as on the screenshot below

I get following error:

Error Message: The action ‘[Action description]’ with output mode ‘Generate a Message’ must have at least one output set. Error Code: PluginActionNoOutputSetInEmitMode Conversation Id: [ID] Time (UTC): 2024-10-09T12:04:52.553Z

Important facts:

  • PA flow is correctly executed and returns output
  • when I changed output settings to one from screenshot below, output is correctly displayed in the chat

Anyone has an idea why output is not correctly recognized in generative mode?

The error message states: "The action with output mode 'Generate a Message' must have at least one output set." This typically occurs when the output of the Power Automate flow is not correctly mapped back to the Copilot. From your screenshot, it seems the flow generates output but isn't being interpreted properly. Try ensuring that every action that outputs a message has at least one "output" clearly defined (like using record or another dynamic value). This should avoid the error about not having an output set.

Yes the output needs to be configured.

    • When an action is set to "Generate a Message" in Copilot, it expects to produce some sort of output, but in this case, no output was configured, leading to the error.
    • Look at the "Outputs" section in the action and ensure that an output (like a message or variable) is properly set up to be used or displayed.
    • If you have set the action to "Generate a Message" (or similar), ensure that you have defined a message that will be sent to the user after the action completes.
    • If you're using dynamic output from a plugin, make sure the plugin action returns an expected value and that you have defined where this value will be displayed.

    Thanks.

    Hi Vinoth,

    Can you elaborate on this?

Try ensuring that every action that outputs a message has at least one "output" clearly defined (like using record or another dynamic value). This should avoid the error about not having an output set.

    What it means is,
Every action  that we use in the copilot should output something, atleast a simple message or a dynamic record.
If you don’t need any dynamic content, ensure there’s at least a simple static message after the action, e.g., “Response successfully retrieved.”

In your case, can u let me know what are the steps being followed. the above screenshot is very hard to determine where you are specifying the output.

    Thanks.

    Hi Vinoth,

flow successfully returns a string value (which is CSV with some items). If I explicitly map it using You create a message, it is correctly displayed. Only in generative mode it returns an error. For me it seems like a bug, but maybe I'm missing something.

    Noted.
In that case, you can raise a Microsoft Support Ticket.

    Thanks.
