Using Dataverse

Hello,

I have created a Canvas app that uses a custom table built in Dataverse. However, after sharing the app with an end user, the user is unable to access it and receives the following error message:

“You need a Power Apps license to use this app.”

I would appreciate your guidance on how to resolve this issue, and which license is required to ensure the application works correctly for end users.

I have also created a Power Pages site that uses Dataverse with a custom table I created. In this case, end users do not encounter this issue when accessing the site, and no Power Apps license is required.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Best Regards,

Canvas apps created using Dataverse require end users to have a premium license. If you were using SharePoint as the data source you would not need a premium license.

Power Pages requires Dataverse so you probably purchased a pack of licenses which allows your users to access your site.

Check with your Power Platform administrator for license availability as they should be able to assign licenses, if they are available, to your end users,

When SharePoint is used, there will be no issue regarding Premium licensing for end users.

    Yes, that’s correct.

When you use SharePoint as the data source, it is included under standard connectors, so end users do not need a Power Apps premium license (assuming they already have a Microsoft 365 license).

The premium licensing requirement only comes into play when using Dataverse (custom tables) or other premium connectors are used in app.

SharePoint is a standard connector , hence it will work.  if the connector or action is peremium then you need a premium licence

    Hi,

I am struggling to understand this concept to be honest.

We use Dataverse for our CRM. We use many Dataverse connectors in many flows within our CRM no problem.

I have built many power apps that work fine (albeit with no Dataverse connections previously).

I have built a new canvas app that used to point to spreadsheets but now I want it to look at our CRM just to pull back records, not write to the DB. But it says:

“You need a Power Apps license to use this app.”

    For the record I have:

    Dynamics 365 Sales Professional
    M365 E5
    Power Apps for Developer
    Power Automate Free

Can someone explain this paradox for me? If i can already use Dataverse in the CRM and in flows, why on earth do i now need a power apps license? Even though I have all of the above licenses??! WHY must i pay for YET ANOTHER license just to read records that we already pay for?!

I agree this is very confusing.

The unfortunate thing is that D365 Sales Professional does not include a seeded Power Apps license. The Premium and Enterprise versions of D365 Sales do include Power Apps.

The best resource is licensing PDF file that you can download from this page:

This clarifies how D365 Sales Professional doesn't include Power Apps, but does include Power Automate - which correlates with you're seeing with regards to running flows.

Thanks Tim, really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Forgive my lack of knowledge, can you explain why we can use the CRM and flows and apps within that solution with dataverse, but i cannot use a canvas app with dataverse?

I just dont understand why I can use dataverse in some apps and flows in a solution but not from a canvas app?

    Thanks in advance!
