Is Power Automate development stalled?

I have been using Power Automate on and off for a while. I have enjoyed working with it, but I keep hitting limitations.  Many limitations seem to have been around for a while based on reading forum comments both MS and Reddit along with the MS Power Automate Ideas page.

Observations

-They have not added/improved support for their own new products like MS Fabric. There are many many integrations between Power Automate and MS Fabric that are missing (some are listed in ideas pages). I have even heard MS Employees on the Fabric said indicate they wish this would happen.

 - Power Automate cannot move files larger than 20-40 megs through the “On-premises data gateway” (size depends on what you are doing). This is way too small these days. We know the Gateway itself supports large file transfers for Power BI and MS Fabric Data Flows Gen 2. So, the limitation seems to be somewhere else.

-Power Automate should have cleaner process to deal with reading and writing CSV files of various types. CSV files are a common format for file transfers, and it is limited and challenging in Power Automate.

-The release notes for the Power Automate service seem to show only minor feature improvements. There are many powerful feature requests, however it does not feel like they are being implemented. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/released-versions/power-automate

-The MS Power Automate team does not seem to respond much on their own Ideas page. Some of the few comments I can find are from a few years ago with response that include “we should have more information soon”
-MS Team Members do not seem to be active in the “MS Power Automate Power Platform Community”
https://community.powerplatform.com/forums/thread/?groupid=46ce02a3-e1a7-4176-81fc-d93a4001d287&page=1
nore do MS Team Members seem to be active in the Reddit forum Microsoft Power Automate (Microsoft Flow)” https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrosoftFlow/

With some other major products, you see MS Team member taking an active role.

Not every feature we might want can be added but seems like many things are stalled.

Do others have information that would say otherwise or other limitations that seem like they should have been around and seem like they should have been addressed?

Love to hear I am wrong and things above will be coming soon.

    HI

This is not an MS forum, so we would not know if these are coming, you should go put them in the ideas for feedback sites for Microsoft (easily searchable) as then it can contribute to the rest of us who also lol have pushed for changes :-)

This question was for both discussion and input by others using the product and for Microsoft if they saw the post. I really wanted to see what others using Power Automate thought.

Not sure if you read my entire post, but I did mention the "Ideas" page for Power Automate. I am actually following several ideas As I said above MS does not seem to be responding on the ideas page either.

I am confused as you said this is not an MS Forum. This is an MS form hosted by Microsoft. If MS employees choose not to respond that is different. I think it would be good if MS Employees responded as it shows strong product support. I can tell you on Reddit MS Employees do respond in some of the forums. I posted the same question on the Reddit Power Automate forum and there was agreement. I even had an MS Employee in a different area comment in general (but not about Power Automate).

Love to hear what people think about the Power Automate Development and/or the Lack of it.

It maybe that you want them to respond, but its still a community support forum. While Microsoft maintains it, there are no active FTE's who actually come and answer people.

Still the best places are ideas AND feedback (as mentioned in my post).

We just had the Power Platform Community Conference, that would have been a good place (there are ones all over the world), if you can ever attend to take your suggestions etc and talk directly to the Power Platform team and leadership.

Even there I spent all day, every day answering questions in the Ask a Pro from open until close in the Copilot, Power Automate, Power Automate, Fabric / Power Bi and Dynamics tables, then onto the hackathon and so forth. Even at these events, they rely us on volunteers (mostly super users) to come and help answer questions. It's a bummer when my only response is what I say here, and that is :-) please pester then in requests and tickets until it changes, until then, here is what you can do.

I wish our :-) wish lists got handled a lot faster also and agree there are gaps that still exist and honestly probably always will as they are clearly not priorities.

Ha they should hold a raffle every year.... one idea / suggestion wins and gets implemented.

I think that you're right, @asjones987, there's a lot about Power Automate (PAuto), specifically, as a product which is concerning. Both from users who use it personally in their daily work, to power users and developers, to people that rely on it as a part of their offering in low/no-code development on consultancy basis.

Before I go on, well done for sticking around ... don't be put off by anyone saying that you're in the wrong place, or asking the wrong question. This is not Stack Exchange/whatever, the worst situation you can normally hope for, here, is no responses! ;-)

Anyway ... yes ... A chief issue for me is that there is zero open structure to the handling of the system, and that does not mirror the *excellent* handling of it's parent product, Logic Apps (LA), on Azure ... which PAuto is basically a version of.

I mean, as a flippant humour-intended remark, there is not even a dark mode.

As a more pertinent, serious, remark ... they pushed this new UI on everyone LONG before it was PROD ready ... and ... there are still potentially back-breaking issues, there.

Why do I say potentially? Well, it all comes back to how LA are handled (at least the GUI) ... and the openness of that. If you have problems with the LA GUI, there is a GitHub (not linking here to prevent it getting a LOT of unneeded PAuto traffic, more on that in a second!) where you can scan to see whether others are also seeing the same issue.

With PAuto, we can only hope that MS has managed to notice an issue, and ... if they have ... to include it in the message center ... which you are lucky if you can see. Plus, if you want to contact them about it? Better hope you're paying (which is fine, not complaining, there ... but ... ) or are the admin at your company, because if not ... it's going to be weeks before you even get a pointless question in response (that's not a judgement, just how support works) that you might miss ... and ... ugh ... it's ... it's not good.

The thing about the two products is made worse because the PAuto GUI developers forked their GUI off from the LA development ... so ... even if we found a fixed version of an issue we have in PAuto on LA's GitHub ... we have ZERO clue what has been done to it on the PAuto side. That is horrible, IMO.

    ---

One thing that I will say about the other communities (which run on better - non-power-platform-based - forum software) is that those MS professionals that you're seeing often tend to be very ... ... ... ... swift ... short (not rude) ... and ... quite often nonsensical in their responses. I'd put them as the equivalent of the chancers on here that just quickly post links to their blogs / money makers, and leave nothing in the forum. Not necessarily wrong, or bad, as people or contributors ... but I'd hardly class them as a useful as a proper response.

    ---

Anyway ... thought I'd just leave some general chatter (not answers) about the two parts of your post that I think you should spin out in to separate question threads, those being file transfer and CSVs:
    • Power Automate cannot move files larger than 20-40 megs through the “On-premises data gateway” (size depends on what you are doing). This is way too small these days. We know the Gateway itself supports large file transfers for Power BI and MS Fabric Data Flows Gen 2. So, the limitation seems to be somewhere else.
    • Power Automate should have cleaner process to deal with reading and writing CSV files of various types. CSV files are a common format for file transfers, and it is limited and challenging in Power Automate.
Before I do, though, if you do raise them as questions ( ... and PLEASE do 🙏🙂 ) just make sure that you paste pictorial examples of what you've done / tried thus far (obfuscated where necessary), and (where possible) include sample data and/or a paste of any non-sensitive actions in a code block, too. This really helps folks assist as quickly as possible without guessing. :)

Oh, and ... probably best that we do not dwell on these topics ... as they're DEFINITELY good question fodder ... but ... I'm hoping that the below gives you a nice start, at least. :-)

    File Transfers Chat

With File Transfer you may wish to look into 'chunking' and suchlike, there are quite a few ways to handle large (or large amounts of) files, but they're not *all* straight forward. Also, potentially look at using adjacent services that you already pay for that CAN take the files. For example, I may be misremembering, but there's a OneDrive or Google Drive action which ostensibly allows you to give it a link, and then it will go off and download the file directly. It ... just takes a bit of doing. Once you've got it on one of the major services, you can work from there.

That is, of course ... keeping things as 'free' as possible ... there are more expensive solutions out there, including LA and Azure Data Factory, to name but two.

    CSV Chat

On CSVs, this is a topic that has been covered ... a LOT ... on this forum. Unfortunately some of the posts may not be accessible because their links don't work (transferred from the old forum) or ... well ... that search tool isn't great. ;-)

However, I feel you on that, specifically. I literally developed my own CSV Function App (using open source javascript, python, or PHP, code/libraries, I think which I baked INTO the Function App to ensure ongoing functionality) and I am not a coder. However ... I then put that in place with an LA for a client, and that did the CSV work ... in either direction. The data CSV action is OK for making tables, but ... it's not 100% ... and (obviously) is only one way.

There are also paid services, too.

A third option is putting something in an Excel sheet, then calling on Excel actions to enact a script or add-in to produce / manage your CSV data.

    ---

Either way ... again, hope that you raise some additional questions, and ... great thread!!

I just came back from the Power Platform Community Conference, and I would say you are correct in the assessment that development on Power Automate seems to be stalled. I've seen incremental changes in Power Automate, but those changes are mostly around forcing Copilot into everything. One just has to look at the "new designer". How long has that been out and still has issues that people have been complaining about since day one. At the conference, there were sessions where the presenter still used the old designer, so I think that says something.

At least in the sessions I attended, there was very little on Power Automate itself. Most sessions were focused on Copilot, Copilot Studio, and agentic workflows. This is the second time I attended the conference, and this year's conference was a huge disappointment compared to last year. If something new was announced at the conference, I was in zombie mode and missed it. The closing keynote with Ryan Cunningham in the arena was supposed to be 30-miunutes long but lasted barely 10 minutes. He turned around and walked off the stage, and I think people were stunned that it was over, as there was no applause. The co-worker I was with, we looked at each other when the confetti cannons went off and said, "that's it?"

And while Microsoft seems to be acutely focused on AI, actual improvements seem minimal at best. The focus seems to be to cram Copilot everywhere, but no real focus on making it work or perform to standards that would be required in highly regulated industries. In a meeting I had this morning, we were discussing if anyone had any positive experiences with AI so far. This is a summary (generated by AI) of the discussion:

However, don't get me wrong. Just because there doesn't seem to be a lot of progress in the development of Power Automate tools does not mean it is not a powerful tool. It is definitely more capable than SharePoint 2010 or 2013 workflows despite its limitations.
