Copilot Studio agent flow disappeared from designer and version history is empty

Hi all,

I’m working in Copilot Studio with an agent flow that was previously saved/published and actively used by a topic.

The flow had the following structure:

  • When an agent calls the flow

  • Several variable initialization steps

  • A Do until loop

  • A connector/action call to retrieve an async result

  • Variable updates inside the loop

  • Respond to the agent

  •

While editing/testing the flow, the designer suddenly reset to an empty canvas showing only ā€œAdd a triggerā€. I did not intentionally delete the flow or its trigger/actions.

What makes this more concerning is that when I open Version history, the panel is completely empty. I expected to see at least the previously saved or published version.

I have not intentionally saved or published the empty version after noticing the issue.

Has anyone seen this before? Is there any way to restore the previous saved/published version of an agent flow, or recover it from the backend / Power Automate side?

Environment/context:

  • Product: Copilot Studio
  • Flow type: Agent flow
  • Trigger: ā€œWhen an agent calls the flowā€
  • Issue: Designer shows empty canvas / Add trigger
  • Version history: Empty
  • Flow was previously used successfully by a topi

  •

Any guidance on recovery steps would be appreciated.

Thanks!

    ,Hello

Other people have run into this too. The flow definition is probably still in Dataverse; the Copilot Studio designer just cannot display it. If Version history is empty, it usually means the UI cannot read the version stream, not that the data is missing.

Step 1 — stop. Do not save, publish, or edit the blank canvas. Every save risks overwriting the real definition. Close the tab.

    Recovery, in order:

    1. Open the flow from make.powerautomate.com in the same environment (not Copilot Studio). It often renders correctly there. Check Version history, restore the last good version, and re-publish.
    2. make.powerapps.com → Solutions → your solution → the flow. Check Status and Run history. Successful runs from before the incident mean the definition is still live in the backend.
    3. Export the solution as unmanaged and inspect Workflows/<flow-name>.json in the zip. If the trigger + actions are there, the data is intact and the problem is on the designer side. Re-import into a clean solution and open it from there.
    4. Solution layers — open the flow in the solution → See solution layers. If an empty unmanaged layer sits on top of a managed/published one, delete the unmanaged layer to fall back.
    5. Audit + recycle — check Power Apps "Recently deleted"; have an admin search Purview audit for WorkflowUpdated/WorkflowDeleted events to find who and when.
    6. Dataverse point-in-time restore (Production: ~7 days retention). An admin can restore the environment — or better, restore into a copy and export the flow from there.
