Unable to access Copilot Agent from Canvas App Control

Hi Team, there seems to be a shift on how we access/ leverage Copilot agents via PowerApps (Canvas App). Earlier we used to have the Copilot Control with which would allow us to perform data operations (Read). Now, that seems to be replaced with M365 and now theer are lot of tenant level permissions needed to allow Copilot to Read Dataverse. Any htoughts on this/ anyone tried?

Yes, you’re correct, there has been a recent shift.

The earlier Copilot control in canvas apps is being deprecated (can’t be added to new apps since Feb 2026), and Microsoft is moving toward Microsoft 365 Copilot embedded as a side panel instead.

This new approach relies heavily on tenant- and environment-level configuration, especially enabling Dataverse for Copilot, search indexing, and appropriate permissions, which is why you’re seeing additional setup requirements compared to the earlier model.

Also worth noting: when using Copilot Studio agents, they don’t automatically read Dataverse data unless explicitly configured, which can change expected behavior.

Right now, the recommended direction is to adopt Microsoft 365 Copilot in canvas apps or use a custom PCF-based embedding if you need tighter in-app control.

Starting February 2, 2026, you can't add the Copilot control to new canvas apps. Existing apps with this control will remain functional for a limited time but will eventually no longer be supported. Microsoft 365 Copilot in canvas apps is the new recommended solution for natural language interactions in canvas apps. To ensure a smooth transition and prevent any disruption, we recommend that you migrate to Microsoft 365 Copilot as soon as it becomes available in your environment.
