Making Changes to a Word Document

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by 14
Hello,
I want to create a flow that grabs the last created weekly report (.docx) each week and copies it to the next week. The flow needs to run weekly on alternating weeks, find the last document created in the folder, create a new copy of it, rename it to show the correct date in the document name (MMDDYYYY), and save it in the correct month folder. Finally, I need to make 3 changes in the newly created document.
I have completed all of the steps except for the last one, which is making the 3 changes inside the Word document. Since the reports change every week, I can't use a Word template. I couldn’t find a connector or action for that.
Please advise. Thanks!

Thank you for choosing Microsoft Community.

You've got most of the flow set up perfectly!

For the final step of making changes inside the Word document, you can use Power Automate's Word actions.

    Here's a step-by-step guide to help you:

Launch Word: Use the "Launch Word" action to open the newly created document.

This action creates a Word instance that can be used in subsequent actions.

Read from Word Document: Use the "Read from Word document" action to retrieve the content you want to modify. You can specify the entire document, specific pages, or bookmarks.

Modify Content: Use the "Replace Text in Word Document" action to make the necessary changes. You can specify the text to find and the replacement text.

Save Word Document: Use the "Save Word" action to save the modified document. You can specify the format and location.

Here's an example of how you can set up these actions in your flow:

    Launch Word:
    Action: Launch Word
Parameters: Path to the newly created document

    Read from Word Document:
    Action: Read from Word document
Parameters: Specify the content to read (e.g., entire document, specific pages, or bookmarks)

    Replace Text in Word Document:
Action: Replace Text in Word Document
Parameters: Specify the text to find and the replacement text

    Save Word Document:
    Action: Save Word
Parameters: Specify the format and location to save the document
You can find more details on the available Word actions in Power Automate below:

    Kind regards,

That's correct! The Word actions are available in Power Automate Desktop, but not in Power Automate online.

However, you can still achieve your goal using the Word Online (Business) connector in Power Automate online.

    Here's how:
Create a Word Template: First, create a Word template with content controls for the parts you want to modify.

Save this template in a document library supported by Microsoft Graph (OneDrive for Business, SharePoint Online Sites, or Office 365 Groups).

Populate the Word Template: Use the "Populate a Microsoft Word template" action to fill in the content controls with the required data.

This action allows you to specify the values for the content controls in your template.

Save the Document: Save the populated document to the desired location.

Here's an example of how you can set up these actions in your flow:
    Populate a Microsoft Word template:

Action: Populate a Microsoft Word template
Parameters: Specify the template file, document library, and values for the content controls

    Create File:
    Action: Create File
Parameters: Specify the destination folder, file name, and file content.

You can find more details on the Word Online (Business) connector

@Robu1 thank you for the explanation, but as I mentioned in my initial post, I can’t create a template. I’ll give takolota1’s solution a try.
