Variables within Prompt Steps Being Wiped Automatically

Hi all,

I have encountered an issue within my generative prompt steps upon loading up Copilot studio today. Every step that includes a prompt action across my multiple bot versions has had its variable inputs removed without my input. After manually adding the variables back and refreshing the page, or if copilot studio leaves this page during a test run that sees it navigate to a different topic, the same variable wiping occurs, causing errors when I ask the bot a question. This issue also occurred for one of my colleagues when seeing them open the same bot on their device.
This is not an issue that occurred yesterday afternoon so I am wondering if a recent site update has caused this bug to occur? Please let me know.

    Hi

Since the issue started suddenly, affects multiple bot versions, and can be reproduced by other users, it appears more likely to be a platform-side issue rather than a configuration problem.

    Could you please confirm:

    • Does this occur in all environments or only one specific environment?
    • What type of variables are being removed (topic, global, or action inputs)?
    • Does the issue persist after saving, publishing, and reopening the copilot?

    Hi there,

    - I tested two different environments and the same issue persists across both.

    - All types of variables are being removed from this step, though this specific prompt originally used topic and global variables.

    - Yes, the variable wiping will happen again if I save, publish and reopen the agent.

Hope this extra information is helpful!

Hi! What you're describing — variables being removed from prompt nodes automatically, affecting multiple bot versions and multiple users — sounds like a platform-level issue rather than something in your configuration.

What Microsoft Learn says about prompt node variables

Per Work with variables – Microsoft Copilot Studio, variables used as inputs to prompt actions should persist as part of the topic definition. If they're being cleared on save/reload without user action, this points to a bug in the authoring experience.

Recommended steps while waiting for a fix

    1. Report to Microsoft Support — Per Get help and support – Microsoft Learn, report via the Copilot Studio support portal with: environment ID, bot/agent IDs, and the time the issue started.
    2. Check for known issues — Review the Copilot Studio troubleshooting documentation for any active service advisories.
    3. Temporary workaround — Try replacing prompt node variable inputs with literal values or hardcoded expressions to confirm whether the issue is specific to variable binding in prompt nodes.
    4. Export and compare — Export your bot's solution before and after the variable-clearing event to capture the difference in the topic definition, which will help with the support ticket.

    Hi all,

I raised a ticket the other day about this and the issue is being escalated to the Microsoft Teams Product Group for specialized research.

I see a Known issue in the Admin Center regarding this issue.

I am experiencing the same issue. My environment is currently the preview version. Is there a way to switch back to the non-preview version?

This is the workaround from Microsoft:

    Workaround
From the topic, navigate to any other tab, e.g. Activity. Then go back to Topics - Open topic, without refreshing the page.
