Building a branded client app for a tax advisory firm with Power Apps – viable approach?

Hi everyone!

I’m exploring the possibility of building a client-facing app for a tax advisory firm using Microsoft Power Apps together with Microsoft Power Automate, and I’d really appreciate insights from anyone who has implemented something similar.

This is the thing:

We are a small advisory firm that wants to improve the client experience and automate some internal processes. The idea is to create a branded client app where customers could:

  • Upload tax documents and invoices

  • Track the status of their filings or requests

  • Receive notifications or reminders (tax deadlines, missing documentation, etc.)

  • Access simple dashboards with key information

  • Communicate with the advisory team

Our initial idea is something like this:

Power Apps: client portal / interface (with our branding and UX)

Power Automate: workflows for document processing, notifications, and internal task automation

SharePoint / Dataverse / OneDrive: document storage and data management

Has anyone built a client portal or app for professional services (tax, legal, consulting) using Power Apps?

My questions are:

Are there limitations when trying to implement strong branding and a polished UI?
Did it actually improve efficiency and client experience, or did you find it too complex for clients to adopt?

I’m especially interested in real experiences, specially what worked or what didn’t.

Thanks in advance and thank you from reading me

Yes, many firms have built client-facing portals and apps using Microsoft Power Apps together with Microsoft Power Automate, especially in professional services like tax, legal, and consulting. However, the architecture choice is critical, because Power Apps was originally designed more for internal business apps than public client portals.

    Implement like below :

    Feature Recommended Tooling Why?
Document Upload Power Pages + SharePoint Store documents in SharePoint folders for easy internal access. Use Power Automate to rename files upon upload (e.g., "ClientName_2025_Invoice.pdf").
Status Tracking Dataverse + Power Pages Use a "Status" column in a Dataverse table. When your team updates the status internally, the client sees it instantly on their dashboard.
Notifications Power Automate + Outlook/SMS Trigger reminders 15 days before tax deadlines based on a date column in your database.
Dashboards Power BI Embedded Embed a simplified Power BI report into the portal to show the client their tax liability or savings trends.

Canvas Apps can absolutely work for client‑facing tax workflows
    • Clients are known users (invited guests / B2B)
    • Client count is limited or manageable
    • You want maximum UX control
    • You want faster iteration than Power Pages
    ❌ When it doesn’t
    • Anonymous users
    • Thousands of external users
    • SEO / public access
If you need the externalization part you have to go with  Power Page Implementation, Canvas App cannot directly support externalization.
