Sharepoint vs Azure SQL performance in Apps

Hi All

I have developed several apps where I am connecting to SharePoint and pulling a record or a handful of multiple records via a text lookup key. The SharePoint lists vary in size, anywhere between 1k and 20k rows.

The performance of these apps seems quite unstable in terms of data loading times; using Lookup or Collect on a SharePoint list sometimes takes 1 second and sometimes takes 30 seconds. Using this forum I've tried multiple strategies to improve this, but users continue to complain about slow and inconsistent loading times.

We are considering moving to Azure SQL mainly to improve in-app performance (among other benefits). I am looking for some validation here -- has anyone switched from SharePoint to Azure SQL and seen improved performance in apps?

I have seen a few comments saying this should help but yet to find a case where someone has actually switched and seen the performance improve. Considering Azure SQL is a premium connector I need to make sure I will see "premium" improvements 🙂

For best performance in Powerapps with regards to Datasource, consider either Azure SQL or CDS. These are ahead of SharePoint in several ways.

    I personally use Azure SQL

What I did was develop the app using on-premise SQL Server and SQL Server Express.  The reason I did was to be able to use SQL Profiler.  It really helped optimize performance.  Once I had it working properly I migrated to Azure SQL DB.  It was simple to do.  I found the use of views and collections good techniques to improve performance.
