Ad-Hoc approvers

I'm wondering if there are any templates out there where an approval workflow assigns approvers based on a list on the file.

Say for example I have a Word Document in my library and it has an attribute [data type persons, and multi select] "Approvers" and that list is populated with Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd. When the user checks in the document, the workflow is triggered and it adds Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny as approvers.

If no templates, how do I assign those users. Watching youtube, I have been able to create a workflow, with hardcoded approver. But that simply won't do for my use case.

And one more question, how can users easily see who has and has not approved while the workflow is in flight (and afterwards as well).

In your flow initialize an array variable. Follow this with an Apply to each action that contains the output of your people field. In the Apply to each action add an Append to array variable with your people field that has the e-mail value into the array variable created in the first step.

Outside of the Apply to each, add a Join action with the array variable in From and enter "; " (semicolon and a space) in the Join with field. Use the output of the join action in the Assigned to field of your approval.

Your flow will look like this:

If you want the person who submitted/modified the document to be able to track the progress of the approval, expand the advanced options and put their e-mail address in the Requestor field. This will then also allow them to cancel the approval. Otherwise, the approval will come from you since the flow runs under your credentials.

Thanks. I will try that and report back to you.

We had the same idea, and we followed this video to solve it.
Basically, you can send an array of approvers and it will create approvals to each sequentialy
