Connection Reference cannot find existing connections

I have an existing connection in the environment and would like to edit a connection reference to use it.

However, the connection reference cannot find it, so I created a new connection following the instructions.

I still cannot find the connections in the connection reference.

    Your first screenshot of the connection reference doesn't show that you have chosen SQL as the connector.  You have to choose a connection type before you can point the connection reference at the connection.

    However, it is gray which does not allow me to make any edits. Can you give me suggestions to change the type?

    Are you in a Managed solution?  Otherwise you select the connection type when you create the connection reference.  The point is that it won't show you connections until after you select the type.
