Get Custom Columns in Document Library

Hello all and happy Friday!  I've tried and tried and then I searched here and cannot believe I can't find this.  I have a simple document library in SharePoint Online and need to monitor a Time/Date field.  I cannot seem to get the custom columns I've added to the library...any thoughts?  I can list out the folder names in the root of the library, which are the only folders I want to monitor.  From there, I want to see if the date field column "Retention End" value eq utcNow()... Thanks in advance!
