I have a complex approval process library in Sharepoint. I want to be able to track approvals/rejections and comments from those actions but I don't want to use the built-in SharePoint Document Library Approval Status column. I have built a custom "Status" choice field within a library that has content approval turned ON for both major/minor versions. Everything in the workflow is working up until I start to record the output of the "Start and Wait for An Approval" action step. This fails because my internal Approval Status is set to "Draft" and approving can't take place with this status. How do I remove the functionality of the Approval Status (aka ModerationStatus) column from my library??
Why do you want to bypass the OOTB content approval functionality?
It works perfectly for what you want to achieve.
Anyway - simply set Require Content approval to No in the Versioning Settings of the library
