Failure to update PCF component followed by canvas error

I have a PCF component in a canvas apps. When I import a new version I am asked if i wish to update in my canvas app. This then results in the following error, the application is empty and my components are not updated. The only way I can restore my application is to skip the update.

Has anybody seen this error before and if so what is the fix?
