Instagram OAuth Connection Error

Hi power people,

I am unable to connect to Instagram, receiving the following error in the popup:

{"error_type": "OAuthException", "code": 400, "error_message": "Invalid scope field(s): basic"}

I have attempted this from Vivaldi, Chrome and Edge from Windows 10. I have received this message both before and after the embedded Instagram login screen, but usually it comes up immediately in the pop up window without even an attempted login.

Would appreciate any pointers or diagnostics.

I have the same question (0)

    Hello @plastacs ,

    Can you let me know what you are passing as 'Scope' parameter ?

    https://api.instagram.com/oauth/authorize
     ?client_id={app-id}
     &redirect_uri={redirect-uri}
     &scope=user_profile,user_media
     &response_type=code

    https://developers.facebook.com/docs/instagram-basic-display-api/getting-started

    Let me know.

    Re: Instagram OAuth Connection Error

    Hi @anupam8555, thank you for your response.

    You are giving me too much credit - my interaction is exclusively with the Power Automate GUI. This is not a development issue, but a user one.

    Here are the steps which result in the error:

    0. Using web interface at https://unitedkingdom.flow.microsoft.com

    1. Create new automated flow with included (not custom) Instagram 'When I upload a new media' trigger

    2. Click 'Sign In' to connect to Instagram

    3. Login to Instagram in pop up window, using correct details

    4. Click 'Save Info' (it doesn't make a difference clicking 'Not now'

    5. Error displays in pop-up window

    6. Return to Untitled Flow, see error message 'You closed the sign-in window before completing sign in'

    The error is not related to a chrome extension, because the error is reproduced on an unmodified Edge browser. I have also attempted it on two internet connections in case it was due to a firewall.

    Here are some screenshots of the sequence.

    Other factors that may or may not be relevant:

    • this Office 365 account is only a few days old
    • I'm using Windows 10 Pro 1903

    Thanks again for your help.

    Re: Instagram OAuth Connection Error

    Hello @plastacs ,

    I have tried using Instagram connector and I am also having same issue as yours. When I dig into more I found that Instagram has changed their authentication methods and disabled earlier authentication methods (Legacy API). They are now switched to "Basic Display API" which is based on Oauth2.0 framework. This looks to me that they will be updating this "Instagram" connector with their new framework. Alternatively you can raise support request with Microsoft for same.

    Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks

    Anupam

    Thank you Anupam. I will raise a support request to let them know the connection process is broken.

    Re: Keep Instagram OAuth Connection Error

    Due to Facebook new constraints, Microsoft cannot continue to keep the Instagram connector working. We have deprecated this connector and updated the docs: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/connectors/instagram/. But as an alternative, we have provided an open source Instagram connector for our developers to use (this link is also mentioned in the above documentation). Please follow the instructions in the link to deploy this connector as custom connector and you should be able to do the invoke same actions/triggers that were available in the old connector.

    Re: Keep Instagram OAuth Connection Error

    If Microsoft hasn't been able to fix the connection issue with Facebook/Instagram by now, they need to remove the connection option from the platform altogether. The average user is not a developer, and will not understand how to build their own custom connectors. It's ultimately frustrating and confusing when someone receives error messages with no explanation as to why when they try to establish a flow connection. Has there been any progress on this known issue? I am still receiving the same "error_type, invalid platform app, etc.. message" that all of the above commenters have had and it's almost a year later from the original post.
