LookUp Columns in Editable Grids - Model Driven App

I have noticed that when modifying lookup records in an editable grid, inside a model driven app, the drop down tab that appears will show either no options or the names of existing records. It does not show the options actually stored in the lookup column.

The operation of lookup columns works correctly, when modifying the columns displayed using the "edit columns" button in the top right corner, and finally saving this as a new view.

Essentially, lookup columns do not work as expected in non-saved views, whether default or custom.

Is this expected behavior?

This is the result I expected, the lookup drop down tab shows the options in the actual lookup column.

However, this is the result I get when I modify the columns displayed using the "Edit Columns", the result is the name of the records in the primary table are now the options displayed in the lookup column drop down tab.
