This app is in read only mode

Today I work from home trying to get important things done for my company and suddenly when I open my app powerapps says the app is in read only mode. I cannot change, save and publish the app. Maybe I left the editing window open on the pc on my company yesterday but is this not a bit too harsh of a punishment? Nobody works on my app but me.

Until now I only got warnings about this I could ignore.

How do I get around this?

Oh and btw I I click on "learn more" on the popup I get an advertisement for the new surface laptop.

Maybe it's a virus?

    Hi @HansHeintz ,

Firstly, clear your cache - if this does not work I suggest you lodge a Support Ticket with Microsoft

Please click Accept as solution if my post helped you solve your issue. This will help others find it more readily. It also closes the item. If the content was useful in other ways, please consider giving it Thumbs Up.

The problem resolved itself in the course of the day. I worked on a copy and will now try to remember and patch all changes to the regular version. I fear that by just overwriting it with the copy of the app I worked on the shortcut on the phones of my 40+ users will not function anymore.

Thanks Warren, clearing the cache worked for me!

Mine was weird though as I only ever have the app open on my work computer and after restarting my computer it still said it was in use by 'CurrentUser'.

    Might be a bug?

I'm having a terrible time with this!! Clearing history and cache doesn't work. Everytime I leave the app, this happens. The first time I had to restart to get it to recognize this and let me edit. But the second time after clearing my history, cache, etc AND restarting my computer, I STILL can't get out of Read-only mode. This is a terrible feature and when I tried the link provided for Microsoft support, it just circles me around to virtual agents and no way to submit a ticket. So completely frustrating!!!

I agree. Previously, when there was someone in an app, you couldn't get in at all. In theory accessing it at the same time in a read only version could be helpful, but the update doesn't seem production ready.

Clearing history and cache and restarting browser does nothing for me either on apps where I'm the only user and have it open in only 1 browser. Sometimes it works the next day.

    Bummer!

@kky1  & @spons The only thing that I can think of that might solve the problem is to log into office.com and find the button that 'signs you out' everywhere.

Then try opening PowerApps in a private tab in your browser so when you are done with it, it will delete all saved data once the tab is closed.

Let me know if that works!

Hello @SilannaIT-Dale - this morning when I logged in, it is working. I should note I logged in the last time yesterday in Edge bc I was using Chrome when it kept re-routing me to "read-only".

Also, I have been working in incognito mode or private browser window so am not sure why the cache/cookie issue was still happening in Chrome. (I prefer Chrome because with Edge I noticed that the app can appear wonky for end users, even when I built the app with a responsive design.)

But I sincerely appreciate your suggestion!

I ran into this today as well, and I'm the only one that opens it for editing, and it said was open by 'currentuser'.  Even after closing browser, let it sit for an hour, no go.    Eventually I came back to it, and it was in Edit mode.   Also, I did notice that later on, when I went in, and got the same thing, it gives a notification in the normal notification area that I could override, and there was an override button, and that seems to have worked.

We also use a dev version, that we then save as over the live version (have to use Replace feature), and it automatically pops up to publish the new version on the live.   Well, couple tries, wouldn't work (just prompts for Replace, and nothing after that), left for meeting.  Came back, tried again, it apparently replaced, asked to publish.. and then it couldn't because, guess what... Open for editing by 'currentuser'.  Sigh.   Open live version, override editing, publish, done.

    Hi @KenAllgood1 @kky1 & @HansHeintz ,

Yes, this new feature of Microsoft seems to behave weirdly!! Definitely not production ready...

What I have noticed is that the problem will occur if the session times out or is disconnected (i.e. close your browser) before 'exiting' the app.

By 'exiting' the app, I mean returning to the main library of apps/SharePoint list (depending on your Power App type), before just closing your browser or timing out due to inactivity.

Not saying this is the sole cause of this problem, just what I have observed that prevents the problem entirely for me.

    Hope it helps someone 🙂
