ServiceNow - update an existing record - attaching a PDF

I want to add a pdf to an existing record in Service now. The only way I have found is to send an email with the file as an attachment. I have tried, and failed miserably, with using the Upload an attachment action. Can someone give me guidance as to if the email method is my only method
