Issue:
I have a canvas Power App with a barcode reader, a few weeks ago it was working perfectly on 5 iPads (Air 2), around 2 weeks ago they stopped working one-by-one. The barcode reader is clickable and opens the camera interface but just has a black screen with the rest of the screen loaded as normal (the flashlight, zoom, blue header), it even has the green dot to show its using the camera in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
Things tried:
- Restart the iPad,
- Sign in and out of app,
- Publish the app again with a small change,
- Taking the barcode reader off and re-adding it to the app,
- Update iOS to 15.7.9 and update the power apps app to 3.23092.11,
- Uninstall and reinstall the app,
- Sign into the app with a different user,
- Remove and enable permission to use the camera,
- Resetting the iPad,
- Tried to test using the retired Barcode Scanner and that showed the camera so the code for this may need to be applied to the barcode reader,
- Tested on another iPad and it works but this is a 4th gen, same version of power apps but iOS is 16.6.1,
- Tested on android phones - works fine.
iPad spec:
- iOS: 15.7.9
- Model: iPad Air 2 (same for all 5 iPads)
- Power Apps version: 3.23092.11
- Session ID: 03517e4c-fded-41d7-b98f-99108bb726a3
I think this is becoming a real issue for others too, see these posts I've found with the same issue:
I see the same screen as this person: https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Power-Apps-Experimental-Features/Barcode-Reader-Camera-Black-Screen-Can-t-Scan-Anything-in-iPad/m-p/2342749
The solution to fix this "barcode reader black screen" is to
- Switch the display mode to "Default" under "Settings -> Display & Brightness -> Display" and
- Reset the Font setting to default (middle position) under Settings -> Display & Brightness -> Display -> Text Size
