Update columns in Share point by date

On a SharePoint file, I update pending employees to active in one column, and headcount to one in another. Their start date is in another column, which would be the trigger. What is the most effective way to automate this process?

    Looking to automate updating of headcount column to 1.0 and employee status to Active, based on first day of joining.
