How To Switch Flow Ownership?

(0) ShareShare

The past few months we've started using flows in our organization. Recently, the question arose as to what would happen if one of the accounts linked to the flows were to be terminated. Our solution was to create a Service Account and share the ownership of each flow with that account.

However, we found that despite sharing ownership, the original account was still considered the Primary Owner, with the SA being the Co-Owner.
What would happen to the flow and ownership thereof if the original account (the primary owner) were to be deleted?

And, in case this would break the flow, is there way to change primary ownership?

Yes you can hit edit or set primary owner. Not positive with Power Automate, but with workflows the inactive account as the owner will still work until you deactivate or turn off the process. You'll receive an error when turning it back on.

    Hi

You can change primary owner here:

Make sure the flow is in a solution. Otherwise you can't change it.

If the primary owner is deleted, ownership of the flow is typically transferred to the co-owner(s).

you can export the flow as a .zip package and then have the new owner import it.
This will recreate the flow under their account, effectively making them the owner.

(If you got your solution you can mark as solution and give it a Like)

    Regards,
    Srini

You said ownership would be transferred to co-owners. Does that mean one of the co-owners becomes the next primary owner?

Also, do you know if this works for non-solution flows?

The system will not automatically set a primary owner. Co-owners have to reassign a owner.

If you're worried about losing access to the flow after the original owner is deleted, there’s no need to stress. A Power Platform admin can always step in to ensure you retain access.

Go to the Power Platform Admin Center, select the environment and find the flow under Resources > Flows. Then share it with you or another user.
