Windows app performance

While launching an app today, I had a user contact me regarding the performance of the Windows version of the app player compared to the mobile version. Basically the scenario is that we are loading in a table that is on the bigger side, which is cached locally and only reloaded when data is changed or updated, as well as some other smaller tables that are loaded fresh every time. I did some time trials to see what the differences were and here are my results:

On an iPhone 7 Plus, it took roughly 49 seconds to load all the data and about 13 seconds to load with cached data.

On a Surface Pro 4 (i7, 16GB RAM), it took around 8 minutes 50 seconds to load it all and 40 seconds to load with cached data.

The web version took about 32 seconds (for all the data of course). This was done on the same Surface Pro.

I did my testing on the same WiFi connection and made sure there was limited activity on the network to control these trials as much as possible.

I don't know that much can or will be done about this; it seems that the majority of Power App-ers don't use the Windows app. I am just posting this for the information and in case anyone else has experienced the same and would like to comment on it. The vast time difference was surprising, to say the least!

Same experience on our side, web broswer way better than desktop/laptop native app or even mobile device native app.

I have had the same experience with an app I have in Production. I have an active case with Microsoft for months now but apparently the Windows app isnt something Microsoft is investing too much time on. I have instructed my customer to use a browser instead. I will let you know if I hear anything back from Microsoft.

Thanks for sharing that @wyotim The time difference is shocking!

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what language/framework the Windows App is based on? Is it Electron?

    https://electronjs.org/

Perhaps there might be something about that underlying implementation/platform that causes the slowness.

Just tagging @CarlosFigueira as he pretty much knows everything 😉
