Deprecation of the “Send me an email notification” action

Hi community! We are writing to communicate the deprecation of the “Send me an email notification” action.

What is changing?

The action "Send me an email notification" (hereafter referred to as the "deprecated action") in the Notifications connector has been deprecated. We encourage you to now utilize one of these two existing actions: the "Send an email (V2)" action available in the Outlook connector, or the "Send an email notification (V3)" available in the Mail connector.

Why is this change happening?

Security is our top priority, and these actions provide better security and higher service reliability for our customers.

How do I adjust to the change?

If you don't currently use the "Send me an email notification" action for your flows, then you won't need to make any changes. However, please follow this guide to migrate away from the deprecated action:
  1. Open the flow that contains the action "Send me an email notification" from the Notifications connector.
  2. (Optional) add the Get my profile (V2) action to the beginning of your flow. This action will fetch the Microsoft profile of the owner of the Office 365 Users connection used in the flow run. This action will allow you to preserve the same behavior as the deprecation action (which always sent the email to the connection owner). This step is optional if you intend to specify an exact email address as the recipient.
  3. Add one of the following actions to the flow where you want it in the flow:
    1. Outlook connector (recommended): Send an email (V2)
    2. Mail connector: Send an email notification (V3)
  4. In the “To” field of the new action, click "Switch to Advanced Mode" and in the field click on the lightning bolt icon.
  5. In the token picker select “Mail” from the “Get my profile” action.
  6. Copy over the email title and body from the deprecated action into the new action.
  7. Delete the old, deprecated action.
  8. Save your flow. You can optionally test your flow to make sure it is working as expected.

How do I find the actions in my flows?

To help you find flows that call the "Send me an email notification" action, we created a flow to help you. This "helper flow", when triggered manually, will search through all the flows in all your environments. The helper flow will then generate a report and share it through email.

To use this flow:
  1. Download the flow attached to this forum post.
  2. Log into the Power Automate portal using an account with admin access.
  3. Switch to the environment where you would like to import the helper flow.
  4. Go to the "My Flows" page.
  5. Click on "Import" then "Import Package (Legacy)" to import the helper flow .zip file you downloaded in step #1.
  6. On the import page, you will need to either create some new connections, or select the pre-existing connections you have for the following connectors:
    1. Office 365 Users
    2. Office 365 Outlook
    3. Power Automate Management
  7. Click "Import" and wait until the import process to complete.
  8. Open the imported flow and click the "Turn On" button to enable it.
At this point you can run the flow and the report will be emailed to you directly. We encourage you to edit the flow to suit your organizations preferences.

What is the deprecation timeline?

Update (07/23/2025):
  • We have postponed the end of life of the deprecated action. On August 1st, 2025, your flows will not be affected.
  • We will announce a new end of life in the future, both on this forum post as well as on the Power Platform Admin Center (PPAC).

Update (06/27/2025):
  • Starting August 1st, 2025, the deprecated action will begin to fail 1% of the time. Postponed!
  • Further updates on the failure rate will continue to be posted here.

Original update (01/27/2025):
  • Connector design-time: in February 2025, we disabled the ability to add the deprecated action to flows to prevent new usage.
  • Runtime: we will soon start enforcing the deprecation at runtime, so the "Send me an email notification" will begin to fail at runtime.

What if I miss something?

We'll be watching usage levels of the deprecated action and we will reach out to customers that continue to have significant usage.

Where can I read more?

You can read the latest guidance in the Administer environments and Power Automate resources documentation.

Who can I contact for more information?

Please ask any questions that you may have here and we'll get you answers. Thanks!

    How does this affect the out of the box Content Approval flows.
    when i use the 'Configure Page Approval Flow' option in Site Pages, it generates a flow, which if you open it up in Power Automate, it uses these Send An Notification actions.
    a) are these effected
    b) will the default flow that is created be updated to use the new actions.

    Apologies for the late reply @CU05021139-0.

    a) Yes, any scenario using the Notifications connector to send emails is affected. If we discover that user action is required to update existing flows, we will be sure to send out communications and update this forum post. We will first look into the possibility of auto-upgrading the flows on our side, in order to to avoid requiring user action on your side.

    b) Yes, in the future we will update the default flow to stop using the Notifications connector.

    Any tips for working with the parse JSON output as per this step - parse JSON on the “actions” result, and then look for the “swaggerOperationId” property to have a value of “SendEmailNotification”

    I'm continually getting an error with trying to pull out those with swaggerOperationId SendEmailNotification - I've tried it so many ways but cannot proceed to generate a list of the flows using the connector

    In my view, this is horrific change management.  We're in the process of rolling out a new solution that uses the notification action because many of our users don't yet have an exchange online mailbox.  Announcing the depreciation at the point when the action was taken down and indicating that it may stop working in a number of months has done nothing to inspire confidence in the Power Apps Platform or is suitability for application development in a healthcare context.  I have only discovered this post because I happened to notice the action we'd previously used was missing when I tried to create a test flow.

    This is all well-and-good, but the flow that gets AUTOMATICALLY created by SharePoint when you choose "Set a Reminder" on the "Automate" menu of a List actually USES this “Send me an email notification” action.  So, what will happen to all the flows that people have simply created in using the SharePoint user interface?

    Thank you for your feedback. To make things easier for you and other customers, I took the time to create a "helper flow" that searches through the flows across your environments and emails a report of the impacted flows. Please see the updated forum post.

    @Adam_IH I'm really sorry for the inconvenience and loss of time the sudden deprecation caused for you and your team. I will take your feedback to my team that we should have provided more notice before shutting off new access to the action to avoid causing surprises for customers, especially in critical industries as yours (healthcare).

    For this SharePoint scenario, the flow must be updated by users since it is created on behalf of the user by the SharePoint service.

    The attachment for the flow seems broken.  Clicking it gives me a blank page with this error:

    {
      "error": {
        "code": "9004010A",
        "message": "An unexpected error occurred while processing the request"
      }
    }

    (Hopefully someone sees this soon...?  I love that a flow for identifying uses of the depreciated action was made at least...)
