Somewhere inside Microsoft Teams, buried beneath layers of assignments, reflect data and feedback forms, my end-of-term reports are crying out for freedom. They exist as fragments. They are detailed comments on essays, performance data, and carefully crafted feedback, all scattered across the digital learning and teaching space.
A major frustration for me, as a teacher and a school leader, is that most of what goes into these reports already exists in digital form. It's all sitting in Microsoft Teams, strewn across assignments, feedback comments, and grade books. We are, in effect, doing double the work.
Instead of opening a blank document when it comes to writing reports, imagine if you could click a button in Microsoft Teams that automatically did the following for each student:
Pull together all the feedback from their assignments in Teams;
Collate the rubrics used to mark assessments to highlight strengths and areas of development;
Analyse student performance trends across various assessment objectives;
Incorporate their reflect data and work habits;
Generate a preliminary prose report within a designated word limit that is grammatically correct.
The teacher would then review the preliminary report and add personal observations or stylistic touches, or even provide previous reports as a reference for tone and style. You would adjust any language that does not fit and add those details that only a teacher would notice.
The result would be a professional, detailed report that is precise in its analysis of issues and suggested ways forward, maintains the teacher's voice, and fosters human connection. It would also save hours of work.
I hope this is something that is coming or someone can point out how it could be done using Power Automate!
