Dataverse Knowledge Source Missing in Copilot Studio New Experience

(2) ShareShare

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello Copilot Studio Product Group,

We would like to report an inconsistency between the classic and new Copilot Studio authoring experiences regarding Dataverse knowledge sources.

Issue Summary

According to Microsoft Learn documentation, Dataverse tables can be added as a knowledge source for Copilot Studio agents. However, when using the new Copilot Studio experience, the Dataverse option does not appear under Knowledge > Add knowledge

Observed Behavior

In the new experience:

  • Dataverse is not listed under the Featured tab.

  • Dataverse is not listed under the Advanced tab.

  • Searching for "Dataverse" returns no results.

  • Dataverse is still available under Tools > Add a tool within the same agent.

  •

Environment Validation

The behavior was reproduced across multiple environments and was observed by both the customer and Microsoft support engineers. The following prerequisites were already verified:

  • Dataverse database exists.

  • Dataverse Search is enabled.

  • Agent authentication is configured as Authenticate with Microsoft.

  • No relevant Data Policies or security restrictions were identified.

  • Dataverse is available as a Tool in the same agent.

  •

Current Workaround

Switching back to the classic Copilot Studio experience allows Dataverse to be added successfully as a knowledge source. The customer confirmed that this workaround functions as expected.

Product Feedback / Questions

  1. Is the absence of Dataverse Knowledge in the new experience currently by design?

  2. Is this feature still being rolled out to the new experience?

  3. Is there any published roadmap or ETA for parity between the classic and new experiences?

  4. Should customers continue using the classic experience when Dataverse knowledge grounding is required?

  5.

Any clarification from the Product Group would be greatly appreciated, as the current behavior appears inconsistent with the documented Dataverse knowledge-source capability.

    Hi @BP-23060657-0,

As you have made sure the search is enabled,  I see one more option to check and see in the Dataverse table - appropriate permission to access underlying data. The last option in the screenshot. You can drill it down bit further here.

I am sure some clues I tried to give. If these clues help to resolve the issue brought you by here, please don't forget to check the box Does this answer your question? At the same time, I am pretty sure you have liked the response!

    Hi @Haque,

    Thank you for your response!

I would like to let you know that "Authenticate with Microsoft" has been enabled as well, unfortunately no luck.

I just pointed you if there are valid and appropriate permissions to access the underlying data. I understood you have search enabled, and authentication is in place. The last point of the previous screenshot:
"To add Dataverse tables as a knowledge source, you must have the appropriate permissions to access the underlying data. Missing or insufficient permissions might prevent tables from being visible or selectable during setup. Learn more in Assign a security role to a user."

"All supported tables require that the maker has READ permissions" -  Copilot studio Quotas and limits.

By the way - did you perform a search in the search box [search for a knowledge source] ? Nothing comes out from searching?

Also, please check if you have obeyed all of these:

    Limits and Quotes

I am sure some clues I tried to give. If these clues help to resolve the issue brought you by here, please don't forget to check the box Does this answer your question? At the same time, I am pretty sure you have liked the response!

I think I am in the same situation with the new Copilot experience. I made sure that I have all the required permissions.

    I tested with two agents:

    • One created with the classic Copilot Studio experience, using my Dataverse tables as a knowledge source.

    • Another created with the new Copilot Studio experience, where the Dataverse knowledge source connector is simply not available.

    •

For now, the only workaround is to use Dataverse tools such as "List rows". We will have to wait for the Dataverse knowledge source connector to return in the new experience, unless Microsoft intends to promote the tools-based approach instead.

I hope this information helps you.

The 400 error on Get attachments usually means the List Name or Item ID isn't in the format the action expects.

For the SharePoint Get attachments action:
    - List Name: use the list's display name exactly as it appears in SharePoint, not the internal name or URL. If the list is named "My Documents", use that exactly.
    - Item ID: must be a plain integer (e.g. 5), not a GUID or object. If you're passing the ID from the Power Pages flow trigger or a previous action, wrap it in int() or use string(int(yourVariable)) to ensure it's a clean number.

Also check: the Site Address must match exactly the SharePoint site URL without a trailing slash. Small differences like https://tenant.sharepoint.com/sites/sitename vs https://tenant.sharepoint.com/sites/sitename/ can cause 400 errors.

Add Compose actions before the Get attachments step to output the exact values you're passing for Site Address, List Name, and Item ID, then check the run history to confirm the values look correct before the action tries to use them.
