The issue ended up being residual files left over after updating the Data Gateway. Thanks, Microsoft! One day you'll learn how to clean house.
yes, the recommendation is a dedicated set of VMs that can see the source (and ideally sit close to it).
Note that performance and BCP are a bit at odds here. BCP would ask for geographically dispersed cluster members but that introduces vast performance fluctuations.

I was under the impression that the Gateway needed to run on the thing that is hosting what we want access to.
If the SQL database is on Server A, can I install the Gateway on a completely different server (Server B)?
Enterprise Gateway is running as a service. Personal Gateway is running as an application.
This is running on a dumb Windows 7 machine because that's where the SQL database is.
That is not recommended. The gateway and the SQL server will fight for the available memory and CPU. Gateways should be installed on dedicated VMs.
How can I tell if this is Standard/Enterprise? Microsoft had one download link.
