I am new to powerapps. I just want to create a pie chart or bar chart in PowerApps that is linked to a sharepoint list column called status that will count the number of times the following records occur.

Try this in the Advance Data section of the Pie Chart.

    Items > AddColumns('SPListName', "Count", 1)

    Labels > Status

    Series > Count

Its counting all of them as one. Is there a way to group them and count?

Under advanced, make sure you have the Label and Series pointing to the correct fields.

Also make sure your Item Color Set does indeed have different colors, and enough colors for each category

OK, lets try this again but this time we'll group the statuses together and aggregate the count.

    Items > AddColumns(GroupBy(AddColumns('SPListName', "Count", 1), "Status", "Counts"), "Total",Sum(Counts, Count))
    Labels > Status
    Series > Total
