Enabling Generative AI Feature in Power Virtual Agent

Hello Power Platform Community,

I’m experimenting with Power Virtual Agent for the first time and am particularly interested in the Generative AI feature. I've enabled "Generative AI features" in the environment settings, but the option for "Use Generative answers" is still not active; it's greyed out.

I've looked for solutions online without much luck and I’m wondering if this could be related to the type of license I have. The feature seems to require "Premium licensing," and I currently have an A3 license. Could this be the reason why I can't access it?

I'm also considering whether it might be an issue with regional availability, as our organization is in Western Canada and our data is hosted in Eastern Canada. Is it possible that the feature isn't available in our area?

If anyone has insights or can provide guidance on how to get this feature working, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

What region is the environment? can you try in a US environment?

    Hi @andjang

You are correct, A3 license does not include any of the AI capabilities in Power Virtual Agents (now called Copilot Studio), you would need to create a trial environment or to buy a license to be able to use this feature. Regarding your region: Canada is in the list of supported countries for Generative Answers, this is not a problem.

@remidyon Thank you for your reply, that explains a lot.

I have a couple more questions to ensure I fully understand the licensing requirements and user access:

1.Would you know the minimum license requirement needed to utilize the Generative AI in Copilot Studio?

    2. If I upgrade my license to access this AI feature, will other users within our organization, who may not have the same level of licensing, still be able to use the AI-enhanced bot features?

    Thank you again in advance.

    Hi @andjang

    1. The minimum license for Copilot Studio is 1 pack of 25000 messages (a message is something sent or received by a user) which cost $200 a month. This gets you all the AI capabilities, storage, premium connectors, etc.

    2. Messages can be consumed by any users (internal or external users) depending where you publish your bot (on Teams, a public facing website, an app, you can even mix and match channels). Users that access a Copilot do not need any licenses; they will just consume your pool of messages.

@remidyon Could you confirm if the GenerativeAI features work while on the free trial. I've added a URL through the GenAI section of the settings, but the test bot is referencing the open web and ignoring the site I gave it when for questions that are very clearly best pulled from the given site. I also get a "Generative AI is premium feature and can be enabled or managed by your administrators" message, so it's unclear whether it's working. I'm checking because it seems confusing if the free trial of Copilot Studio doesn't have GenAI, but I can't figure out what else could be the problem. We have an E3 license, based in the US. No M365 Copilot unfortunately as we are under 300 staff.

    Hi @ecouper ,

Copilot trial includes all the production functionalities available in your region, if you are in a region where GenAI is available then you will have access to it. If you use internal "viral trial" in your own tenant then the GenAI functionalities can be restricted by your admin (seems like it by the message you are showing) and in this case you need to request your admin to enable the feature in a dedicated environment.

In US, so should be good there. I accessed the trial by hitting the "Try Free" button here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-copilot/microsoft-copilot-studio I didn't intend to handcuff myself. Is there a way to access the non-"viral trial" option? I looked through the admin portal with my admin (3rd party vendor) who's new to PVA or Copilot Studio. Neither of us saw a settings section for copilot much less a toggle for GenAI. Maybe it's a chicken and egg situation where there's no settings section when you are in the trial? Given we both looked and neither saw anything, is there a walk through or article of how to access the admin settings for Copilot Studio? Thanks in advance!

Could you send a couple of screenshots of your copilot's generative AI screen/configuration and the conversation booster topic? It does not make sense that your copilot pulls information from the general internet and not grounded on your specific website - it is never supposed to do that.

Maybe I'm not phrasing it right to say "pulling from web." The response reads "surfaced with Azure OpenAI," and the the content source is from a 13 years pdf on the website I pointed to. Maybe I interpreted that incorrectly, and it is just a really, really bad response. When I use Copilot within Edge and have it look at the same webpage, I get a correct answer, but I'm not with Copilot Studio, so I assumed the GenAI wasn't working fully. You'll see in the images, it didn't under a very basic "what is iyf" despite having the website for IYF (https://www.iyfglobal.org/) as the reference. I've been trying it with other questions, and it's only drawing from and citing this one 13 year old pdf. https://www.iyfglobal.org/sites/default/files/IYFAR2010.pdf

    Hi @ecouper

If the answers says "surface by azure openAI" then it is grounded on your website, not general knowledge. You can see that it is citing your website.

I tried creating a new copilot and using the same website and I get very good answers. See example with 2 basic questions. It pulls data from the correct pages and not the 13yo PDF.

Have you tried restarting the conversation? Or lowering the moderation?

I can see you used "www.iyfglobal.org" as source for the generative answer,  can you try with "https://iyfglobal.org/"

You should have better results with this URL
