How to manage Dataverse capacity?

Hello,

I'm receiving "excess capacity" emails for Dataverse, like:

And this:

Although I don't know what environment "PlatformEnv-Europe" is....

I have no environment with that name.

I see the tables consuming capacity of this environment:

But can't find them anywhere in the documentation.

What should be done? How to delete this environment or find a way to remove excess data?

Hi @WebPortal ,

Do you have licenses setup? It is showing 0 MB capacity in your environment and if you had a Power Apps Premium licenses this would automatically grant you 10GB of storage at the tenant level (only for the first one that is purchased) and you willl get 250 MB of storage for every user that has that license as well.. If you didn't want to purchase this you could buy a Power Apps Per App license and the first one is granted 5GB at the tenant level and 50MB for each additional user. Overall every environment will consume about 1GB by default in the database unless you install the D365 apps and then it will consume about 2.2GB storage initially.

Step you should look at here is verifying you have the licenses vs. trying to reduce allocated space.

I have a billing policy linked to an azure subscription. It's a pay-as-you-go setup.

Got it, then your allocation is defined as the following: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/pay-as-you-go-meters?tabs=image#dataverse-capacity-meter

Overall the size of your environment makes sense and you really aren't going to get it any smaller based on about 1GB is allocated to the environment automatically. Based on all being pay-as-you-go, I don't see how you are going to remove the messages at this time.

If I delete an environment, not linked to a pay-as-you-go subscription, would that free up the corresponding storage?
By reading the documentation page you sent, the pay-as-you-go billing stops consuming storage from the tenant-wide Dataverse storage pool.
So, I guess this 1GB is referring to the non pay-as-you-go environments, am I right?

Hi @WebPortal ,

I am not familiar with the type of environment you have there. It is a "Platform" type and I have not seen this in the past and does not show as a type of environment that I am aware of (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/environments-overview#types-of-environments). Sorry, I am unable to advise on this one.

For info, this is the feedback I got from Microsoft:
Kindly note that an investigation was with the engineering team and we found out that this environment type was not created by a maker/user but was created by the system due to a maker/user action. Platform type environment, is used by the system features to make first-party cross-environment apps, such as power platform Pipelines, available to customers and their users without the need for the customer to create and configure production environments that consume their paid capacity. Please note that this environment is not using your tenant space allocations, although it is not seen in the standard list of environments, but it can be discovered in various other ways as it is currently in preview state. This environment is not on the standard list of environments on PPAC, so as not to confuse users, but at some point it would be discovered. Although this new feature is yet to be formally documented for public consumption, I have made a request to the publishing team to have it documented as a formal type, describe the usage of it, how it gets created, that it is not billed, and provide our customers with sufficient information about it. This documentation can then be used referenced for easy understanding of the issue. The team confirmed that they have begun an action on this, however, I was not provided with an ETA as they were yet to ascertain that. in the meantime, the only feature that is using this environment type is the public preview of pipelines. A user in your organization must have clicked on the pipeline button in maker and this triggered it to be created behind the scenes. Pipeline records are created, and the deployment system will work with no admin intervention. Tenant admins will be able to launch the pipeline administration experience to manage the pipeline from within that environment. PPAC admin surfaces will be delivered shortly to allow tenant admins to manage the features that use the platform environment shortly. Please let me know if you have further concerns as touching this topic after going through the above.
