Can't login to Power Automate Cloud with the Microsoft Account used to install Desktop Version

Posted on by 4
Hello All,

I'm running into a strange login error, and cannot seem to find a Microsoft Support Site or phone number, so I'm hoping someone here can help.  I posted a portion of the issue in a previous post, but this is a new issue with some overlap.

My apologies for the length of this post, but I don't know how else to best explain what's going on.  I'll take it from the top:

1) Logged into Microsoft 365 with the 'ben@ctg.com' (truncated, not real) email, which is the one originally used to create the Office subscription a couple of years ago.  From the I download and installed Power Automate Desktop.

2) I was able to install the program on a Windows 10 Pro machine (via Remote Desktop) and began watching tutorials and building flows.  Everything seemed to be working fine

3) The project got sidelined for a week or two, so I believe I exited the program.  When I resumed work on it, I loaded the application and it suggested upgrading to the latest version.  I agreed and started the install, but it failed with an error message, suggesting to reboot and try again.  I tried rebooting and other steps, but ultimately all of my work was gone.  No projects, flows, or any trace of the work that I had done.

4) After all that frustration, I gave up trying to recover my work and just started over.  I recreated the flow and now have it working to the point that I would like to start running it on a schedule.  I found a youtube video explaining how to set it up as a Windows Scheduled Task, but several of the options mentioned in the video were not showing up in my PA Desktop Settings.

5) After further investigation, I believe the issue centered around using the free version.  I figured I would need to upgrade to one of the paid versions, so I attempted to go ahead and subscribe online.  That's when the errors surfaced...

6) I could not find any type of upgrade option in the desktop application, so I went online to make.powerautomate.com and went to Settings->Admin Center, where I assumed I could subscribe.  It prompted me for my Microsoft login, but when I entered the 'ben@ctg' email mentioned in step 1, it said 'ctg.com' isn't in our system.  What's baffling that this is the very same Microsoft account email that got me into Microsoft 365 to download the software in the first place.  Another interesting thing I noticed is that when I moused over the profile icon in the upper right corner of that web page, there was a question mark in a circle where typically profile data would appear - not sure if this means anything, just thought it was worth mentioning.

7) I tried using my personal Microsoft account, just to see if I could get in somehow, but the error messages just kept on stacking up.  I'm attaching a screen shot of the last error message I received on the login page.

I'm completely stuck right now - all I want to do is set up a PA subscription so that I can schedule the automation for the flow that I built in PA desktop.  I really don't care how it gets setup, I just need it to start running on a schedule.  There seems to be some odd disconnect between the desktop version and the cloud, with the Microsoft account that worked for the desktop not existing in the cloud.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
-Ben

Can't login to Power Automate Cloud with the Microsoft Account used to install Desktop Version
    HI,

It seems like the account you created years ago is different than the one you are trying to log in with.  Verify this.  Go to www.office.com and login in.  You may already be logged in.  Try and log in with the account you want to use.

If you get an error here, that means you registered your Win Pro 365 license with a different email address.  That's the mismatch.  In general terms you will want to use the same Microsoft account you use for Micrsoft 365.  Again, the error message states the email you are using doesn't exist as a Microsoft account in this tenant.  So there must be a different one.

So outside of your schedule flow you want to turn on, let's get you signed into the account that Windows Pro 10 was created with first.  That's where the licensing resides in this tenant.

You can't use a Microsoft Account to login to the cloud. It has to be a Work or School account (you mentioned having Office 365). That's the account you need to login with and then purchase a Power Automate per user Premium license. That will give you the ability to start a desktop flow from the cloud. Make sure you also use that account when logging into Power Automate Desktop.
