Do live deployments need to happen out of hours?

This might be a bit of a stupid question and I apologise in advance if it is, but I generally held the belief that deployments into Production for live apps actively in use within the business need to be held of hours out of a fear that during the deployment process, the app may not function as expected.

But this applies usually to pro-code applications, and I've never actually tried deploying a low-code app into live that's being actively used. Does anyone have any knowledge on this? Are we able to deploy apps into live production while it's still in use by users, without worrying about lost data or user actions?

    Hi @ngohw ,

Each user has a "local" copy of the app when it is loaded, which will continue to function until they close it. When opening the next time, they will receive a "refresh" button on a banner at the top to load the new version.

There are however a couple of things you need to be aware of: -

    • If you have changed a Flow adding or deleting parameters, then definitely do it out of hours as the "old" PA version will send the incorrect data to the Flow.
    • Likewise, if you have deleted or changed any field names in any of your data sources, or deleted a data source, do the same.

Otherwise, adding "live" generally should not cause any issues.

Generally I would say no, don't deploy whilst users are working on the applications/solutions, but it depends.

    1. What is the urgency of the deployment
      1. Does the current app have a security flaw that needs addressing
      2. Is there data loss happening in the current version
    2. Are you removing any parts of the app that are used in the current version
      1. Tables
      2. Columns
    3. What parts of the app does the change impact

Various other questions should be answers if you want to deploy whilst in use. Having said that there shouldn't be any issues if you're not removing functionality or parts of the solution

Much appreciated, makes sense -- any schema related updates should be done out of hours, visual changes can be done during business hours, and security patches should be done as soon as possible. Thanks all!
