Embedded existing PowerApp in PowerBI shows only blanks

Hi everyone,

I want to embed a PowerApp into a PowerBi report. When in the PowerBi report I create a new powerApp, then everything works fine: the selected items will show in the gallery in the PowerApp. But when I choose an already existing app, the data does load but only shows blanks in the gallery. It does clearly show the amount of records but not the values.

As you can see in the image below, on the left is the PowerBi table and on the right two different embedded PowerApps:

  • Above: PowerApp embedded that already existed
  • Below: PowerApp embedded created new from PowerBi

Capture.PNG

Both show the amount of record selected (from hierarchy 'Metals Others'), but while the lower PowerApp shows the data, the above PowerApp only shows blanks. Also when editing the above PowerApp, the data does not load in the editor and thus is cannot retrieve the columns to use in the app.

I really want to use an already existing PowerApp because then I can make my size custom. If I create a new PowerApp from PowerBi, I can only use the phone size which is not ideal.

Can someone help me with this?

Many thanks!

Ski

    Hi @SkiDK ,

Do you mean that the existing canvas app could not load correctly in powerbi report?

I've made a similar test and met the same problem.

When adding new app in powerbi report, the gallery data will display correctly.

When adding existing app in powerbi report, the gallery data will display blank.

    The reason is that:

when you choose add existing app, the selection of "powerapps data" will refresh.

You need to choose all the fields of powerbi report that you need in the selection of "powerapps data", then choose "add existing app".

What's more, if you edit this existing app, the app will not automatically refresh in your powerbi report.

You just need to choose other reports, then when you back to that report.

When you reopen this report, the embed app will reload, then the app will display the latest version.

    Best regards,

    Hi @v-yutliu-msft

Thanks for your answer and sorry for my late reply.

I have added the necessary fields for the PowerApp first and then chose the existing PowerApp. The issue is that when I edit the existing app, the app does not recognize the columns. The PowerBi integration data does not come through, meaning that the gallery cannot show the values, although the amount of items do exist in the gallery. Reloading the PowerBi report does not work, neither does re-adding the PowerApp. The values still stay empty.

I can show it by collecting the Data in a collection on start of the app:

For the New PowerApp (above image) it shows the columns, but in the Existing PowerApp (lower image) it doesn't, no columns get through:

Here you can see PowerBIIntegration.Data is added as datasource to the gallery:

    Capture.PNG

here you can see that the column (that works in the new added PowerApp) doesn't get recognized.

In powerBi Desktop you can see here that I have added the field to the PowerApp, and I did it before choosing the existing app:

Here you can also see that there actually are items in the gallery because of the multiple separators, but that it doesn't show any of the column data because it doesn't know them.

You know how I can proceed with this?

    Thanks,

    Ski

Have you been able to solve this issue ?

I am running into the same problem

    Hi @RemyO

No, I was not able to solve this. We eventually decided to try a different approach, leaving behind the PowerBI report.

    Sorry.

I was able to figure it out:

    1) You should add an existing app from the power BI service. So do not use desktop

    2) After that you will notice powerbiintegration.refresh() option is not there

I used https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Building-Power-Apps/PowerBIIntegration-Refresh-issue-Existing-App/td-p/271695 as a guide for below

Hi @RemyO Thanks for the reply. I haven't tried it, but I'll mark as solution for future reference for other users with the same issue.
