Announcements
Hi,
I created a model app in Power Apps and when using the "Import from Excel" or "Import from CSV" option to import a file I would like to receive a notification in case there were errors in the imported file. When the import is started you can go to "My Imports" to see the status of the import and determine if there are any errors, but I expect that our users will not proactively go there to see if all went well. Also because it may take a few minutes before the import is complete and then they probably already switched to another task and forget about checking the import status. So I would prefer that they receive a (mail) notification once the import is completed and has failures.
Is there a way to make this possible?
Hello @GeroV
I don't think there is an out-of-the-box solution for your requirement.
One solution I can think of is you create another app to do an import and trigger automation if there is any error.
Another is to enable trace logging (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-apps/developer/data-platform/logging-tracing) and create an automate flow to access these logs to find anything relevant to import fails/successes. This is untested and I think a long shot cause I'm not really sure which dataverse table these logs are stored in and whether automate can access them.
Lastly, you might want to submit it on the Power Apps idea page as it looks like a good feature that Microsoft may want to incorporate.

Thanks @cha_cha for the suggestions. I'll add this to the PowerApps ideas page also.
I enabled the trace logging but no records are written to the tracelog when importing a file. And indeed it seems not possible to access the tracelog from Automate.
Can you elaborate on the "create another app" suggestion? What kind of app do you refer to? A canvas app or something completely outside the PowerApps environment.
Thanks.
A canvas app would be just a trigger but most of the work will be through Power Automate flow. If you can trigger the flow via your existing Power Automate,
This blog has a good example of what you want to achieve.
https://byrondittberner.com/blog/2022/04/30/how-to-use-power-automate-to-import-deduplicate-data-from-excel-online-to-the-dataverse/
The only caveat on this is that your users must put the File in separate storage (SharePoint or OneDrive) first, as they cannot upload the Excel file directly from Power Apps. There is currently no upload function in PowerApps except for uploading Attachments in the EditForm control.
But maybe you can utilize that one upload thing to:
PowerApps --> Upload file ---> Store in SharePoint --> Automate retrieve in SharePoint --> Import in Dataverse
So overall, the alternative is really a bit complicated. Maybe a policy with your users can be the solution for this situation? Like maybe a policy to enforce that any import will go thru one person so that that person can verify that the import of data was successful.
Hi @cha_cha , thanks again. Though the solution described in the blog may work, it is indeed a complicated solution. Falling back to a policy/procedure might be better. FYI, I posted the feature request in the Power Apps Ideas, so you can vote it up there.
