What does the Display message action display when you enable it?

It seems like the %WorkQueueItem% variable contains more than just the value you set. It might contain an Id for the item, or an Id for the queue (or both) and it might already be a custom object. Please check what its value is when you run the flow in debugger to see if you can access the value itself and the properties inside it.

Try passings %WorkQueueItem.Value% as the JSON to convert. This is where the actual value is stored.
