Feature development query

Hi there.

I am currently developing a script that stores and syncs .msg files from outlook to sharepoint and display their full meta data.

Here is what I have achieved:
1. Copy a file into one drive.
2. Sync and display the file on sharepoint.
3. Created columns on sharepoint website and is able to see the file but not the meta data

What I am missing:
1. Display the correct meta data of the file on sharepoint without manually entering the data.

What I have tried:
Use power automate to extract file meta data. (Meta data exist locally but is missing on sharepoint)
Edit the data in sharepoint, and try to extract the meta data in local. (Meta data entered in sharepoint website is missing)

I was wondering if anyone has done something similar and can provide feedback on the next available steps to achieve this.

With Thanks,
Xavier

Don’t try to read metadata from the .msg file in SharePoint. SharePoint can store the file, but it won’t automatically read Outlook metadata like from, to, subject or date from a .msg. I would recommend to start from the email in Outlook instead.

    1. Trigger your Power Automate flow when an email arrives / is moved / is selected.
    2. Create the file in SharePoint.
    3. Immediately use "Update file properties” to fill your SharePoint columns using the email fields (subject, etc).

Use AI Builder if you need extra info from the email text, like invoice number, customer name, reference number, etc. AI Builder is not the right tool to pull normal Outlook metadata from a .msg files.

If you must start from existing .msg files already synced to SharePoint, I would use a Azure Function to read the .msg and then write the values into SharePoint columns. But this is more effort.

Let me know and add some screenshots of what you already have (Power Automate flow).

I have tried to trigger the event in power automate. It seems that the trigger "When a new email arrives in a shared mailbox (V2)" works well. I just hope to clarify for your suggestion between step 1 and 2, how are you able to export the file as a .eml or .msg file? I have only been able to export it as a .eml however the html formatting for the email is displayed in plain text.

I have attempted a "Get email (V2)" and "Get emails (V3)". V2 is able to create the end file in json file. For V3 I was not able to output a file in the message body.

I too have tried using compose after the v2 and was able to create a .eml file but it led to the issue of generating the .eml file with plain html text.

Thank you once again for your input and your suggestion.

    Regards,
    Xavier

    Great!

    You can try this:

In the Original Mailbox Address use the same email address as used in the trigger.

Here use the Body from the action Export email (V2).

Let me know if it worked!
