Find the average of a date range?

Hi all,

Admittedly, math is not my strongest. Quick question, if I use the created date and also capture and end date of a request (via SP list), is it possible to show the average time for date of completion for a choice column?

Does that make sense?

Thanks,

DW

    Hi

would it be ok to ask a clarifying question.

Why would you want a choice column full of date averages I only ask as maybe I am misunderstanding

Also, when you say calculate the average, you mean go through each row, get the average across all rows and display that? What would it do in a Choice?

    Hi FLMike

    Completely understandable question.

It's more to show averages over request types (subject matter).

    E.g.

    Choice 1 - General request
    Choice 2 - Legal request
Choice 3 - Risk and Compliance request

Certain areas want data on average 'time to complete' requests based on subject matter to easily identified effort required.

    Does that make sense?

So I would like to ideally find the average time to complete based on request type (and then narrow it even further by month and also year).

    Hi DMSC,

Yes, it's possible to do this.

If you take the source data and filter it by your choice column, you can call AddColumns to a column that calculates the difference between the created date and end date.

You can then call Sum to find the total difference across all rows and divide by the row count that's derived by calling CountRows.

The important thing to note is that because these functions are not delegable against SharePoint, the source data that's filtered by your choice value must not exceed 2000 rows.  If the volume of data per choice exceeds 2000, the result will not be accurate.

    Worked a treat.
