can a rest api be called from within portals . i know its possible in canvas app through custom connectors .
But what can be the prescribed way for doing so within a Portal app.

If most of the dataset is from non-CDS source , is it advisable to use ajax calls everytime read/write operations are performed within portal(recommended way ?) . Or through a custom control .js file which internally calls apis ? Is there a way to use connectors(within Portal) as in Canvas apps .
