Purpose of PowerApps

I am trying to determine if PowerApps is right for us. We are at the point that our application needs a major revision. It is currently a standard Winforms Client/server app that is used by our customers via Remote App. Our entire infrastructure is in Azure, databases, development, deployment etc. I believe I have determined that common data services (dataverse) is not right for our application (medical/clinical/analytical) in nature with databases in the multi GB range.

Is this platform really for just Device Apps like Android and apple, or is it a substitute for a full fledged we-app?

Pro's/Cons? License considerations?

    Hi @myCatalayst

    PowerApps can create a front end for Azure/SQL database tables without having to recreate the relationships or modify the underlying table structure.  The format is versatile and can be used on hand held devices as well as tablets and desktop computers. I am not conversant with the issues regarding the cost for your organization (that depends on the number of users and developers) but I believe that the security features are HIPAA compliant. I use it myself for my surgical practice.  For further discussion on the costs, I would refer you to a Microsoft employee to determine the best plan for your organization.

    you say that is can be used on desktops, how? When I create a new Canvass app it want to know if it's for a phone or tablet. Desktop is not a choice, nor is web.

    @myCatalayst

    The tablet format will be suitable for desktop applications.  They are all web applications.  If you go to make.powerapps.com and choose sql server (screenshot) you will next encounter a server authentication request.  Once you are authenticated, you can choose a table and PowerApps create a 3 screen app.  Explore it a bit and learn about the controls and how they work together.  Once you are familiar with them, you can select a blank tablet mode and create a tablet/desktop format and add the tables to it.  Since it uses the same backend tables, it will give you two ways that data can be accessed.

    If you want to practice a bit, you can get a temporary account on Plan2 and create a sandbox environment in which you can create an app to explore.  PowerApps may or may not be right for you but there is a way to "dip your toe in the water" before jumping in.
